If you live in a city, chances are you’ve encountered rodents before. And while many of us have begrudgingly accepted the presence of rats and mice as a less-than-desirable part of urban life, the recent outbreak of hantavirus aboard a luxury cruise ship underscores the risk these rodents pose to our health.

Scientists have identified approximately 15,205 rodent-associated viruses across 32 viral families. Many of these viruses, including hantavirus, primarily spread to humans through tiny airborne particles of dried droppings or urine. Each one can cause serious symptoms, days or even weeks after exposure. In the case of hantavirus, the symptoms, which require immediate medical attention, include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and headaches, followed by a cough and breathlessness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises a multipronged approach to preventing these viruses from spreading. The primary recommendations include securing food sources, disposing of rodent waste, plugging any gaps in your home where rodents could enter, and following a specific cleaning protocol.

Droppings should be soaked in a bleach-based spray for five minutes, then removed using paper towels and placed directly into a covered garbage can that is regularly emptied. Don’t sweep or vacuum dry droppings, as that could send infected droplets into the air. Always wear a protective N95 mask and disposable gloves while you work.

Whether you’ve spotted disconcerting signs of rodents in your home or want to take preventive measures as part of your spring cleaning efforts, these essentials will help keep your household healthy.

It could be a disaster if your gloves tear midway through cleaning. You won’t have to worry about that with this pair, which is made of thick, chemical- and puncture-resistant nitrile — a synthetic, petroleum-based material that is safe for those with latex allergies.

They’re available in sizes small to extra-large to ensure a comfortable fit, and the textured finish allows you to grip and clean wet surfaces easily.

These N95s fit the bill. The mask’s three-layer design boasts the highest level of protection against respiratory viruses, filtering 95 percent of non-oil-based particles. Its curved design hugs facial contours for a secure, comfortable fit.
Clorox healthcare germicidal cleaning spray

Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Cleaner Spray

You can rely on this hospital-grade Clorox spray to obliterate any nasty viruses. The bleach-based formula is safe for use on a range of surfaces, including plastics and metals, and it claims to kill 50 microorganisms in around three minutes. If there are children and pets in your home, remember to follow the product’s instructions closely. Try to keep pets and children out of the room until the cleaned surfaces are fully dry and the bleach smell has dissipated. Never mix bleach with other cleaners, to avoid toxic fumes, and keep the space well ventilated. Finally, store bleach safely, keeping it locked away or out of reach.
