A hernia is a gap in the muscular wall that covers the abdomen, through which the contents of the abdomen protrude outward, sometimes creating a visible bulge. Hernias are common, although the types of hernias typically experienced by men and women tend to differ, and they don’t go away on their own — they must be surgically repaired.
