How I Reluctantly Fell in Love With a Mattress Topper
Sleep is one of my favorite things. As I’ve gotten older, it’s only become more important to me and my health, so when something disrupts my sleep, like an aggressively snoring spouse or a midnight cat scuffle, I am not a happy camper the next day.
I tend to be a light sleeper, so I’m pretty particular about my sleep hygiene and environment. I use a silk sleep mask that blocks out all light, yet still allows me to sleep on my side without waking up to the dreaded pillow face. If I’m having trouble dozing off, I enjoy listening to my ASMR playlist. However, the surface I sleep on is perhaps the most important element. And that’s where my mattress topper journey comes into play.
We have a queen-size Keetsa Pillowtop Mattress, which has treated us exceptionally well over the 10years we’ve had it. It’s the Goldilocks of mattresses — not too soft or too firm. It somehow perfectly aligns with my husband's and my sleeping habits (he sleeps like a rock while I’m a tosser). Considering how satisfied we’ve been with our mattress, I was rather reluctant to add a mattress topper over it, but alas, that’s the life of a product-testing editor. So we dubiously welcomed Brooklyn Bedding’s 3” latex mattress topper into our bedroom.

All of that being said, there are still some things that could be improved. It’s a lofty topper, and makes our already tall bed look a bit Princess and the Pea-ish. We have an arthritic cat who loves to be on the bed, and we’ve noticed her struggling to pull herself up onto it lately, so we’ve had to install a footstool to give her a boost. The topper also hangs over the edges a bit, making the mattress look top-heavy. Still, the comfort it adds outweighs these negatives.
