Best for Pressure Relief
Nolah AirFoam Luxe Mattress Topper
Pros
- Two thickness options
- Offers two comfort layers
- Has a cooling cover option
Cons
- May not be true to size
- Topper cover may cause sheets to slide around
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Thickness: 2 or 3 inches
- Materials: CertiPUR-US certified polyurethane foam (topper), polyester and polyethylene (GlacioTex cover), organic cotton (cotton cover)
The Nolah AirFoam Luxe Mattress Topper and GlacioTex Cover is comfortable and supportive, providing pressure relief where you need it most. Plus, it helps you sleep cooler. Its design goes far beyond basic memory foam by adjusting to your body and relieving pressure points without feeling too soft. We appreciate how the cooling cover adds a cool-to-the-touch feel, making it refreshing to get into bed and helping to regulate temperature through the night.
The comfort it provides really stands out. “The topper’s foam molds and supports every part of your body, providing pressure relief where you need it most,” says editor Katrina Cossey. One thing to note: The cooling cover has a smooth, slippery feel that may cause some sheets to shift more than usual, depending on the fabric and fit.

Best Moisture-Wicking
Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex 301 Mattress Topper
Pros
- Easy setup
- Pressure-relieving comfort
- Plush and soft
Cons
- May be too soft for some
- Some nights we still felt warm (but not hot)
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Thickness: 3 or 4 inches
- Materials: GlacioTex cooling cover, copper-infused memory foam, CertiPUR-US certified foam
This mattress topper instantly made my bed feel more inviting, without causing any overnight sweating. I love how plush and soft it is, something I notice the second I lie down. The straps are a huge plus for me too. They keep everything securely in place, so I’m not waking up to a topper that’s moved itself around or bunched up overnight.
It does have a cooling element with its moisture-wicking material, and I can tell it’s designed with that in mind, but I wouldn’t say it completely prevents warmth. There are still nights when I notice a bit of heat, especially as the night goes on, but I never sweat. However, the overall comfort, softness, and stay-put design make it a really enjoyable addition to my bed, and one that I will continue to use often.

Best Organic
Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Topper
Pros
- Removable and washable cover
- Available in two firmness options
- Compatible with most standard mattress sizes
Cons
- Cover can be difficult to get on
- Firmness may not last as long
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Thickness: 2 inches
- Materials: GOLS-certified Dunlop organic latex (topper) and 100 percent GOTS certified organic cotton (cover)
“It’s very comfortable,” says writer Grace Gallagher. “I got medium density. Sometimes I wish I got a firm, but the medium adds support without being too hard.” It’s a great choice if you want to upgrade your mattress without replacing it altogether.

Best Latex
Helix Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper
Pros
- Natural and organic materials
- Plush feel
- Solid support
Cons
- No straps to keep pad in place
- May get a little warm at times
Key Specs
- Sizes Available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Thickness: 2 inches
- Materials: Organic cotton and latex
Julia Childs Heyl, MSW, a California-based clinical social worker and mental health writer, says, “I loved that it is made with natural organic materials.” She also mentioned a couple of downsides, such as straps that don’t keep the pad in place. While she didn’t mention overheating at night, her husband felt a bit hotter while sleeping on it. Overall, it’s a great natural approach to a mattress topper that adds noticeable softness and comfort to your bed.

Best Memory Foam
Layla Memory Foam Topper
Pros
- Features a light and airy foam feel
- Comes with a 30-night trial
- Has copper-gel-infused memory foam to absorb heat
- Features straps to keep it from sliding
Cons
- Not water resistant
- Smell upon arrival
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Thickness: 2 inches
- Materials: Copper gel-infused memory foam
Confession: I can no longer imagine sleeping without this mattress topper. The cooling gel beads in Layla’s 2-inch-thick, high-quality mattress topper kept me chill even on nights when the temps hit triple digits. In addition, it added an extra layer of comfort to my existing memory foam bed, making it so cozy and soft that it was hard to get up in the morning.
This mattress topper also provided great support, thanks to the foam, which condensed under deep compression points such as my hips and shoulders. “I liked the firmness of it — plush and just the right amount of squishy,” says editor Olivia Campbell, who also tested the Layla Memory Foam Topper. She mentioned that the smell took about four days to dissipate. We recommend it for anyone who manages hip, shoulder, or back pain.

Best for Hot Flashes
Slumber Cloud Performance Mattress Pad
Pros
- Comes with a 60-night risk-free trial
- Oeko-Tex certified (free of harmful chemicals)
- Knit elastic skirt to keep the mattress pad in place
- Machine washable
Cons
- Thinner than our other selections
- Some may still feel warm at times
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Twin, full, twin XL, queen, king, split king, California king
- Thickness: 0.25 inches
- Materials: 100 percent Tencel lyocell top fabric with Outlast technology coating, 100 percent polyester fiberfill, full-pocket 100 percent polyester knit elastic skirt
If you’re experiencing menopausal hot flashes, you need the best cooling technology to help you stay comfortable — and this one delivers. Created with temperature-regulating technology originally designed for NASA, the Slumber Cloud Performance Mattress Pad is made to not only absorb heat but also fight moisture. It combines Tencel, a fiber blend known to be moisture-wicking and cool, with Slumber Cloud’s Outlast temperature technology to keep you cool and prevent you from sweating.
Sleeping on this mattress pad, I could feel myself heating up, only to have the warmth neutralized within a matter of minutes. I can see how this mattress pad would be a great choice for anyone dealing with night sweats or hot flashes. I’ve genuinely been impressed by how durable this mattress pad has been. Even after regular use and several washes, it still stays in place, and maintains its plushness and quality.

Best for Night Sweats
Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper
Pros
- Comes with 180-night home trial
- Pressure-relieving memory foam absorbs and dissipates excess body heat
- Treated with antimicrobial agents for longevity
- Has straps to prevent slipping
- Great for all sleep positions
Cons
- Higher price point
- Spot clean only
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, split king, California king
- Thickness: 3 inches
- Materials: Memory foam infused with graphite
On hot nights, I tend to channel my inner rotisserie chicken, tossing, turning, and kicking off the sheets and covers to remain cool. But this mattress topper, which uses graphite technology, helped me remain cool and sleep through the night. It’s also extremely soft and comfortable, and I like how the cover of the mattress topper is made with breathable and moisture-wicking cotton to prevent overheating.
Saatva is one of several companies using graphite materials in their bedding products, which absorb and dissipate excess body heat. As promised, the mattress topper did regulate my body temperature and helped me sleep through the night.

Best Bamboo
Cozy Earth Bamboo Mattress Pad
Pros
- Comes with a 100-night sleep trial
- Extremely soft
- Delivered in an attractive tote bag that can be reused
- Has a 360-degree elastic hem to keep it from sliding
Cons
- Dry cleaning or spot cleaning recommended
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Twin, full, queen, king, California king
- Thickness: Thinner profile
- Materials: 100 percent premium viscose from bamboo
This 2-inch-thick mattress pad actually made me look forward to bedtime. Using premium viscose bamboo fabric, Cozy Earth makes their mattress pad soft and cool to the touch. On especially hot nights, I even chose to forgo a bottom sheet and relied on just the mattress pad to provide a soft and silky surface to keep me cool throughout the night.
Though this offers a soft layer that’s temperature regulating, it is thinner than a traditional mattress topper (yet slightly thicker than a traditional mattress pad) — making it a good alternative for those seeking the cooling effects of a mattress topper without the increased price. A bonus? The company is committed to sustainability — its fiber process is patented, it recycles water, and it doesn’t release waste into the environment.

Best for Cooling and Warming
Sijo TempTune Cooling Mattress Pad
Pros
- Machine washable
- Lower price point than many other mattress pads
- Certified for sustainability and quality by Oeko-Tex
- Made from supersoft materials
- Moisture-wicking and hypoallergenic
- Waterproof
Cons
- Free returns only apply to items purchased on the Sijo website
- May get warm if you don’t move a lot
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Full, queen, king, California king
- Thickness: Fits mattresses up to 18 inches deep
- Materials: Tencel lyocell and mica nylon blend shell, temperature-regulating CLIMA fiber-blend fill, recycled polyester skirts
It’s also nice that you can use it year-round. I’m even looking forward to the winter months, when Sijo’s patented blend of fibers can keep me toasty and warm. In addition to making a mattress pad that feels good, Sijo also believes in doing good and donates 1 percent of every order to a nonprofit of your choice.

Most Comfortable
Nest Bedding Cooling Topper
Pros
- Made with a durable and breathable foam
- Features straps to prevent sliding
- 30-night trial period
- Has both cooling features and pressure relief properties
- CertiPUR-US certified (made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, mercury, lead, or other heavy metals)
Cons
- Spot clean only; not machine washable
- Not as cooling as other mattress toppers
- Not waterproof
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Thickness: 2 inches
- Materials: Energex temperature responsive foam
A good option for side sleepers, the 2-inch-thick Nest Cooling Topper is very comfortable — just sink into it and allow it to hug your body. We appreciate how the mattress topper’s temperature-regulating abilities make it a good option if you live in a cold climate or if you’re looking for added warmth in the winter months.
That said, although I liked the level of comfort on this mattress topper, I didn’t find the Nest topper to be as cooling as other brands. If your primary aim is relieving pressure on your joints, and cooling is a secondary need, this firm mattress topper may be the perfect choice for you.

Best for Back and Side Sleepers
Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper
Pros
- Cool to the touch
- Straps to prevent sliding
- Comes in soft and firm versions
- Has a three-year warranty
Cons
- Heavy, can be challenging to place on top of the mattress
- May dip in the middle
Key Specs
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, split California king, full, queen, king, California king
- Thickness: 3.75 inches
- Materials: GlacioTex cooling cover and premium foam
My first impression of the Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper was that it felt cold, offering a welcome reprieve on hot summer nights. Blending memory foam and a thin layer of microcoils, this mattress topper was initially comfortable, but in the morning, the firmness of the mattress pad left me feeling sore. Brooklyn Bedding does make this mattress topper in soft and firm versions, and I was sent the firm version to review. But I’m a stomach sleeper, and I’ve learned that firm mattress toppers are best for back and side sleepers.
The Brooklyn Bedding Microcoil Mattress Topper has an outer cover made from a polyester material that regulates your temperature. The microcoils are designed to provide contouring comfort, while also allowing cooling airflow and breathability. This mattress pad did remain cool throughout the night.
Comparison Table
We Also Tested
- Sleep Number True Temp Plush Mattress Layer We really loved the plush, cushioned feel of this topper, and it definitely added extra comfort to the bed. However, we noticed that it tends to slip around during the night. It also doesn’t keep you cool, even with its temperature-regulating features.
- Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper This topper by Tuft and Needle was incredibly soft and comfortable, especially for adding a cozy layer to a firmer mattress. That said, it slid around more than we would’ve liked.
- Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper It’s great for pressure relief and overall comfort. Unfortunately, though, the taller setup felt like a bit too much for our preference, and the price kept it from making our best-of list.
How We Tested the Cooling Mattress Toppers
To compile this list, we reviewed a variety of mattress toppers and pads and narrowed them down based on real-world needs like comfort, support, size, and price range. We also consulted with Gbolahan Okubadejo, MD, a board-certified spinal surgeon at the Institute for Comprehensive Spine Care in New Jersey and New York, and Karina Jordan, MD, a sleep and weight management physician with Capital Neurology and Sleep Medicine in McLean, Virginia, to better understand how these features can impact spinal alignment, pressure relief, and overall sleep quality. Saema Tahir, MD, a quadruple-board-certified sleep disorder and pulmonary specialist in New York City, also provided a wealth of information about hormonal changes in sleep and how cooling down can help. I brought my own experience, too, as a mom and teacher who knows how essential quality sleep is for keeping up with busy days.
We tested 15 mattress toppers and pads over a month, evaluating how well each one performed in everyday sleep situations. We assessed for comfort, temperature control, and pressure relief. Based on hands-on testing and expert guidance, we selected mattress toppers that stood out for their support, coolness, and ability to enhance sleep quality.
What to Look for When Buying a Cooling Mattress Pad or Topper if You’re a Hot Sleeper
If you’re a hot sleeper who is looking for a good cooling mattress topper, Dr. Jordan says to look for the following:
- Materials Cotton, linen, organic latex, memory foam, and bamboo contribute to comfort by providing breathability and moisture management. Also look for any certifications earned by the brand; these include the GOLS label, which certifies that a product meets the Global Organic Latex Standard; Oeko-Tex, a certification that means the final product contains no harmful substances; and CertiPUR-US certified, which ensures that it’s made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, mercury, lead, or other heavy metals.
- Thickness A mattress topper is a thicker layer — often made from gel-infused memory foam, latex, or other cooling materials — that sits directly on top of your mattress to actually change how it feels while you sleep. Toppers add noticeable cushioning and are designed to actively help regulate body temperature by pulling heat away from your body, especially for hot sleepers.
- Stability Several of the mattress toppers we tested included straps at all four corners to keep them in place on the mattress. We found that some without the straps slid around while we slept. However, this isn’t always the case, as some without straps may include a grippy material on the bottom to keep them secure.
- Personal Preference Mattresses also reflect personal choice, and during our review period, we learned that even the most beloved mattress pads and toppers don’t work for everyone. Almost every topper or pad review had several claims that the product wasn’t “cooling enough,” which Jordan says is to be expected. “Personal preference is essential when choosing any type of bedding,” she says. “With that in mind, consider products that offer a trial period or return policies that will allow you to try the product to ensure it meets your needs and enhances comfort.”
What Is a Cooling Mattress Topper?
“A cooling mattress topper is a thick layer of material, usually gel-infused memory foam, latex, or wool, that sits on top of your mattress to regulate body temperature while you sleep,” says Dr. Okubadejo. Unlike thinner pads, toppers change how your mattress feels and help pull heat away from your body. He adds that materials, such as gel-infused memory foam, copper-infused foam, phase-change materials, and natural latex, are generally the most effective options.
Do Cooling Mattress Toppers Actually Work for Hot Sleepers?
Cooling mattress toppers can be effective, especially for hot sleepers. According to Dr. Tahir, “Cooling mattress toppers can support thermoregulation. Physiologically, sleep onset requires a drop in core body temperature.” She goes on to say that these toppers, “help facilitate this by improving heat dissipation and moisture control at the skin level, which are critical for maintaining stable sleep architecture.”
She also notes that, depending on its material, a mattress topper can reduce the “external thermal burden, allowing the body’s natural cooling processes to function more effectively.” While toppers won’t feel ice-cold, they can definitely help you stay cooler and more comfortable throughout the night.
What Causes Night Sweats and Overheating During Sleep?
Overheating during sleep is often caused by environmental and lifestyle factors. “Your body naturally drops in temperature to fall asleep, so anything that blocks that process, like thick bedding or a warm room, will make you sweat,” Okubadejo says. He adds that “synthetic sheets trap heat against your skin,” and habits like eating late at night or drinking alcohol can worsen it. “Keeping your room between 65 and 68 degrees F is consistently the single most effective [fix],” he says.
