Decades after my last day of school, I still get that same zip of excitement when May comes around, even though I fully know that for me, there’s no summer break around the corner. Warmer weather does that to me — it makes me want to be more active. I’m signing up for 5K runs and planning long bike rides. Even walking the dog becomes a workout opportunity instead of a rush job.

Reaching my late forties has brought a lot of changes to how I prepare for all this new activity, as well as what I need to do to recover from it. There are new pains and worries, but also new goals. Here are a few things in my survival kit for Middle-Aged Lady Spring.

Diadora mythos running shoes

Diadora Mythos Blushield Vigore V Running Shoes

Sure, I look for the running shoes that will make me feel faster and lighter on my feet, the way I always have. In middle age, however, I have added stability to the top of my criteria. After a catastrophic knee injury, I’m afraid of falling, twisting an ankle, or even just moving in a way that will cause pain. I tested these Diadora sneakers earlier this year, and they absolutely live up to the brand’s promise that the sole will “reduce gait asymmetry and enhance overall balance.” I feel confident in every step. My podiatrist (of course, in middle age, we say things like “my podiatrist”), just gave these sneakers his seal of approval too. Now that the weather is getting warmer, I also like that the mesh upper keeps my feet cool.

Flonase allergy relief

Flonase Allergy Relief

So, seasonal allergies aren’t necessarily new to me in my forties. What is new is the fact that I remember to treat them before I go out, instead of coming home early on a glorious spring day, wondering why my throat is sore and my eyes are itchy. Two puffs of Flonase in each nostril help me stay outside. This corticosteroid helps reduce inflammation in the nasal passages while also slowing mucus production.

I love that breathing easier means I can be more active.
Medcosa flexible ice pack

Medcosa Flexible Sport Ice Pack

Injury prevention can only go so far, and eventually, I will wind up with a throbbing muscle or joint pain. Apparently, simply walking too much on vacation is enough to make both of my overdramatic ankles act like I pulled a Kerri Strug (and if you get that reference, you are also in your perimenopause years!). While rest, ice, compression, and elevation are the first prescription for this type of injury, I don’t always have time to sit still. These flexible ice packs have an adjustable strap that lets me walk around the house while still getting that sweet, sweet pain relief. You can microwave the very same pack for soothing heat on those muscles later.

Bob and Brad C2 Massage Gun

Bob and Brad Massage C2 Massage Gun

Life is better when my husband and I can each have our own massage gun. That is the level of maturity (decrepitude?) we’ve reached. I still swear by my old Theragun, and yet I’m thrilled that I don’t have to share it now that we have this Bob and Brad device, which costs a third as much. It’s super light and has a great range of settings and attachments, including one that gets hot or cold. Now I can work on my tight trapezius while he treats his hamstring, and our son perishes from embarrassment in the next room.
Nobi Nutirtion magnesium glycinate

Nobi Nutrition Magnesium Glycinate 500 mg

Conversations with my friends these days always pivot to one of three things: Heated Rivalry, insomnia, or other perimenopause symptoms. I don’t think magnesium glycinate can help with anyone’s HR obsession, but it’s been recommended to me a lot for the latter two afflictions. Nutritionists and my doctor agree that it’s helpful for people who wake up in the middle of the night. I finally tried it two weeks ago, and wow — I haven’t slept so well since I was in my thirties!

Loop quiet 2 earplugs

Loop Quiet 2 Earplugs

If it’s not my hormones, my aching bones, or my racing thoughts keeping me awake, it’s my husband’s snoring. Last month, I made the very mature decision to stop jabbing him with my elbow in the middle of the night and instead bought a pair of these very cute earplugs. (I already own the Experience earplugs that let me enjoy loud concerts as an old lady.) These are really comfortable, and because they include a range of ear tip sizes, they stay in while I sleep. Now both of us can sleep through the night, and we wake up ready for more spring fun!
