At the risk of sounding like a meme, I have a difficult time imagining what my mornings (and, let’s face it, afternoons) would look like without coffee. And when friends admit to not drinking coffee, I’m instantly skeptical. So you wake up, and that’s…the best you feel all day?

As someone whose kitchen is often crammed with coffee makers and machines, I have also amassed a fairly impressive array of coffee accessories. Using my own experience and that of the fellow writers and editors who have tested various gadgets and accessories to help improve their daily cup of coffee, I’ve compiled a list of the best coffee accessories I have found useful, delightful, or some combination of the two.

Brewing and Extraction

french press

For French Press Fans

ESPRO P7 French Press Coffee Maker

One common complaint about French presses is the urgency: if you don’t drink it right away, you risk a cold, overbrewed cup. ESPRO proposes to fix this with its double-walled, double-filtered design and air lock technology, which ensures that once you press the plunger, your grounds stop steeping. The result is coffee that is optimally brewed and stays warm for much longer than a more typical glass design. Health writer Raki Swanson tested this and declared it “a very sexy French press.”

tea kettle

For a Precise Pour-Over with a Pop of Color

Great Jones x Fellow EKG Pro Kettle

This little kettle has found a permanent spot on my countertop, not least because its bright colors add a fun pop-art vibe to my kitchen. The long, slender spout ensures an even, precise pour, and you can adjust the temperature to the degree (from 104 to 212 degrees F, to be precise), making it handy for both coffee and various kinds of tea. You can set it to hold temp for up to 60 minutes, and it automatically shuts off if the kettle is empty, a safety feature that is much appreciated by someone as forgetful as me. Two minor quibbles: it only has a capacity of about 30 ounces, and the accompanying app doesn’t allow you to control any of the kettle’s settings, which makes me wonder what its purpose actually is. But if you want a kettle for your pour-over coffee, this cheery kettle is my pick.
scale with timer

For Getting Ratios Right

OXO Good Grips 6-lb Precision Scale With Timer

I know, I know. I thought the same thing: But I already have a kitchen scale, do I need one for my coffee? In short: probably. A scale will help you hit the exact ratio of grounds to water you need for a finely-tuned cup of coffee. This one from OXO is readily available, reasonably priced, and can measure from 0.5 grams up. The digital display is easy to read, and it has a built-in timer for the perfect pour-over.

Grinders, Beans, and Finishing Touches

For Dialing In Your Perfect Grind

BODUM Bistro Burr Coffee Grinder

$49.99 at Amazon
$79.99Now 38% Off

A burr grinder is a valuable tool in a coffee connoisseur’s arsenal. A burr grinder crushes coffee beans between two “burrs” (abrasive surfaces), a process which creates a nice, uniform particle size. This also affects the flavor of your coffee, as an inconsistent grind from a blade grinder can make it taste more bitter. Blade grinders also generate more heat, which also impacts your coffee’s flavor.

My sister was a barista and originally recommended the BODUM Bistro. It has 12 grind settings, from French press to espresso, and has a pre-set timer so you can choose your grind duration. I also like the borosilicate glass container that catches your ground coffee; it helps reduce the static that can make coffee grounds cling to everything. It’s also fairly reasonably priced; if you’re lucky, you can snag it on sale. If you’re ready to upgrade your grinder, this is my personal favorite.

manual coffee grinder

For People Who Enjoy the Ritual

Peugeot Brésil Manual Coffee Grinder in Walnut Stained Beechwood - 8 in

Of course, if you really want to take your grinder to the next level, you can grind your beans by hand using a mill from Peugeot (yes, the same company that makes fancy watches). You can adjust your grind based on that day’s brew, and the burr-type grinder makes quick (and quiet) work of your beans. If you like the ritual aspect of preparing a cup of coffee, this is a functional and beautiful way to do so.

For More Consistent Espresso Shots

Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4

$42.29 at Amazon

A consistent tamp is something you’ll probably struggle with when making espresso. If you’re not, then I congratulate you: you’re more talented than I. A well-tamped puck of coffee allows the water to flow evenly through the grounds, and prevents over- or under-extraction, both of which can affect the flavor of the espresso your espresso machine produces. This tamper from Normcore is spring-loaded and is fitted with a leveling plate to help you compact ground coffee more easily. It also comes in a variety of sizes to fit different brands’ portafilters.

coffee club

For Great Beans

Atlas Coffee Club

If you want high-quality coffee beans but don’t know where to start, why not subscribe to a service that does the work for you? To start, Atlas asks you questions about your coffee type preference (ground, whole bean, and even Keurig- or Nespresso-compatible pods), your brew method, caffeine preference, and your roast preference. Then you can choose to have a bag (there are 6-ounce, 12-ounce, and 24-ounce options) sent every two or four weeks.

I’ve been using this service for about two years now, and I’ve never been disappointed. I prefer a whole bean, dark roast, and I’ve received some wonderful varietals, each with a postcard and info card detailing your coffee’s region and characteristics. My only complaint is that if you find a roast you love, you can’t reorder it. That’s not enough to stop me from enjoying a new region every month, however.

milk frother

For Creamy Foam (and More)

Zulay Kitchen Milk Frother With Stand

This little gadget takes up very little space and is surprisingly durable. I have an older version of this that I purchased back in 2022, and I have yet to replace the batteries. Even more surprising, because this gets almost daily use. It’s great for whipping milk into a nice froth, and equally useful for mixing in sweeteners or other add-ins (I’m a fan of honey). It has also proven helpful for mixing my greens powders and creatine. And for less than $25, that’s not a bad investment.

Storage, Organization, and Countertop Solutions

For Keeping Beans Fresh Longer

Coffee Gator Coffee Canister

$21.59 at Amazon
$22.94Now 6% Off
Good coffee starts with good storage, and these canisters lock out oxygen but allow CO2 to vent out, preserving your coffee’s flavor. I have the 16-ounce size, and whenever I open one of my shipments of beans, I immediately decant it into one of these. I also appreciate the date wheel on the lid, which you can use to keep track of your coffee’s freshness. It’s the kind of coffee storage you didn’t know you needed, but you’ll be glad you have.
coffee filter holder

For Smarter (and Prettier) Filter Storage

Yamazaki Home Tosca Coffee Filter Case

Speaking of storage, let’s talk about filters. You could stuff them in a corner of your cabinet or in an old candle jar (ahem, I don’t claim perfection, here), or you could find something clever and design-forward, like this filter case from Yamazaki Home that I’ve been eyeing. It sticks to any magnetic surface, and the wooden bar helps keep coffee filters separated. And I have to admit, it’s prettier than the sorry storage solutions I’ve been using thus far.

For Taming Coffee Pod Clutter

Amazon Basics Nespresso Original Line Coffee Pod Storage Drawer Holder

$26.59 at Amazon
There’s something satisfying about having your coffee pods lined up in neat rows, and I like that this tray lets you tuck them out of sight. Your coffee machine can sit right on top of this pod storage tray, and it fits 50 standard-sized capsules. No more fumbling for capsules early in the morning. And if K-cups are more your thing, there’s a version for that, too.

Cleaning and Maintenance Essentials

For Keeping Your Coffee Machines Running Like New

Urnex Dezcal Descaling Powder

$10.49 at Amazon
Mineral buildup from hard water can take a toll on your coffee equipment, which is why periodically using a descaler is so important. I use this powder from Urnex; it works on all kinds of coffee makers and can even be used to keep your kettle in top shape. It’s also NSF-certified for metal compatibility, meaning it’s been tested and certified for safe use, and can be used on everything from espresso machines to capsule coffee makers. It’s the sort of small piece of maintenance that can make a big difference in the longevity of your machine.

For an Easy Coffee Grinder Cleaning Solution

Urnex Grindz Grinder Cleaning Tablets

$17.25 at Amazon
It’s easy to neglect your grinder, but like anything that touches coffee beans, it needs a little TLC now and then. Coffee beans contain a lot of oils, which, over time, can become rancid and impact the taste of your coffee. That’s why these tablets are so brilliant; throw one in your grinder and whip it through just like you would your coffee beans. It’ll loosen coffee particles while absorbing residue, helping to ensure the grinder you invested in continues to work for years to come.

Mugs and More

latte glassware

For Stylish Sipping

ZWILLING Sorrento Double Wall Latte Glass Set

For something a little different, consider this latte glass set from ZWILLING. The sleek, handleless design makes them easier to store, and the double-walled construction keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold while keeping condensation rings off your table. They’re microwave- and dishwasher-safe and lightweight enough to easily store.
coffee mug

For Coffee That Travels

Fellow Carter Move Mug, 16-oz

Taking your coffee with you is a risky proposition; not only do you have to keep your beverage hot (or cold), you have to worry about lids that leak and containers that just won’t fit in your car’s cup holders. The Fellow Carter Move Mug offers a solution, with its slim design, snap-in splash guard, and an array of vibrant colors.

Raki Swanson said, “I love the design. It is very sleek and doesn't look like a mug or a thermos. I like that when you take off the lid, it has a thin 'lip' that makes it easy to drink out of.” Cold brew fans, fear not: “I also like that you can purchase a cold lid and straw or a carrying handle for an additional cost--this means you have options with this mug,” she added.

How We Chose the Best Coffee Accessories

Many of the coffee accessories on this list are things our writers and editors already use at home. Some of these tools impressed us because they improved our coffee. Others earned their spot by solving those small annoyances that plague our mornings — static cling, stale beans, and awkward appliances. If even one of the picks on this list becomes something you suddenly can’t live without, then we’ve done our job.
