FAQ
The most common types of pain are acute (short-term), chronic (long-term), neuropathic (pain that starts in the nerves), nociceptive (pain due to tissue damage), and radicular pain (pain due to a trapped spinal nerve).
Doctors may ask you to rate your pain using a numbered scale or a series of facial expressions. They'll also likely ask about the pain's character, such as whether it is burning, stabbing, dull, or aching pain, as well as its location.
A pain treatment's effectiveness depends on the cause and your response. Multiple therapies may be necessary, and it can take time to reduce pain. Some people may find complete relief, while others may regain daily function while still feeling some pain.
Physical therapy, massage therapy, biofeedback therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic adjustments are examples of medication-free pain relief. Psychotherapy, physical and occupational therapy, and certain medical procedures may also help alleviate pain while avoiding regular medication.
Severe chronic pain can affect your ability to eat, work, be active, and enjoy life. It can lead to a fixation on the pain that causes irritability and depression, which can contribute to fatigue and sleeplessness.
