        SmoothieBox is our favorite for those who prioritize organic ingredients. This subscription service delivers six smoothie flavors. “The ingredients are organic and nutrient dense. I love that in addition to fruit, all of the SmoothieBox flavors contain vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, or kale,” says Jennifer House, RD, founder of First Step Nutrition in Alberta, Canada. “All of the flavors also include seeds such as flax or sunflower seeds for extra protein, fiber, and healthy fat.”

        While the smoothies contain only 1 g to 4 g of protein per serving, you can order vegan or whey protein powder as an add-on to your subscription. “I wouldn’t recommend one serving as a meal replacement,” says House. “It’s too low in calories, fat, and protein (unless you add a protein powder) to be a stand-alone meal.” She adds that the smoothies could make a great snack if you struggle to find nutrient-dense, lower-calorie options.

        Each smoothie mix comes in a bag and makes two servings. The entire mix has less than 300 calories for both servings. We loved the chocolate (with cocoa powder, kale, zucchini, banana, and sunflower seeds) blended with almond milk and unflavored protein powder. Strawberry banana (with beetroot, cauliflower, and hemp seeds) was tasty with vanilla protein powder. The orange smoothie had a spicy ginger flavor that may be too intense for some people (the green smoothie also contains ginger).

        While the flavors are not as varied as some of the other options on our list, House says that busy parents or professionals, or even kids, can benefit from this service, to get extra fruits and veggies.

        Created by a registered dietitian as a solution for quick, healthy smoothies, Bumpin Blends is our favorite smoothie cube brand. With 24 flavors, from seasonal options like peppermint bark to year-round favorites like Strawberry Superwoman, Bumpin Blends has something for everyone — plus, these smoothies are organic and taste really good.

        The cookie dough smoothie, which contains 5 g of fiber and 4 g of protein from dates, cashews, oats, chickpeas, almond milk, vanilla, and Himalayan pink salt, tastes just like you'd expect but is made with whole foods. Feeling Peachy was another favorite for its simple taste without overbearing sweetness. If you have a sweet tooth, you could add protein powder to bump up the protein and add flavor.

        Bumpin Blends delivers frozen smoothie cubes (six cubes make a smoothie). Each package lists the ingredients, nutrition facts, and recommended liquids, so it is easy to keep tabs on nutrients. It also gives tips like how create a dessert with the cubes or adding them to oatmeal.

        House likes that Bumpin Blends offers access to a dietitian to support your health goals. “Bumpin Blends has a 24/7 hotline to text your personal dietitian-nutritionist with questions, for advice, or to request recipes and tips,” she explains.

        House cautions that the nutrition information varies across flavors, with calories, fiber, and sugar content ranging significantly depending on your choice. “Although the website claims no added sugar, I spotted maple syrup as an ingredient in one smoothie flavor and organic raw honey in another,” she says. This means that you may need to take extra time to make sure that the blends you choose are appropriate for your weight loss goals.

        Many of the smoothie cubes are also lower in protein, so consider these a snack more than a meal, unless you add an extra boost of protein powder. But these cubes are ideal if you like a wide variety of flavors and smoothies with all organic ingredients, and they are kid-friendly, adds House.

        • Splendid Spoon offers a range of ready-to-drink smoothies, with prices around $9.99, in 48 states. We like that it focuses on plant-based ingredients, delivers, and uses variety of ingredients. However, it ultimately didn’t make our list because other ready-to-drink smoothies have similar nutrition or even more protein for a more affordable price.         • Frozen Garden provides blended frozen smoothies in bags for $7.99 to 48 states. We like that it uses whole fruits and vegetables without added sugars.         How We Tested the Best Weight Loss Smoothies

        I’m a dietitian with extensive experience reviewing smoothie companies and supporting individuals in their healthy weight goals. We evaluated 17 companies to get a comprehensive understanding of what smoothies are on the market. Our testing involved tasting each product, analyzing its nutritional content, and consulting with these seven other dietitians to get their expert opinions:

        Are Smoothies a Good Way to Lose Weight?

        Smoothies can be helpful for weight loss, but it's essential to integrate them into a well-balanced diet. Focusing on ingredients that promote fullness, such as those high in protein and fiber, can help keep you satisfied as you reduce calories overall to lose weight. “Smoothies with added vegetables, protein, and seeds are nutrient dense and can help you fulfill your nutrition requirements,” says House. Be cautious of smoothies made with juice or added sugars, as they can add empty calories.

        “While smoothies can support weight loss, they’re not a magic fix,” says Simpson. Aside from keeping an eye on fiber and protein, choosing smoothies with whole fruits, vegetables, and minimal sweeteners can be an effective part of your weight-management strategy.

        What Are the Benefits of Weight Loss Smoothies?

        The benefits of weight loss smoothies include these considerations:

        • Nutrient Density Smoothies are packed with essential vitamins and minerals to support health. “I often recommend my patients enjoy smoothies because they can be an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, which are often neglected during a weight loss journey,” says Hadley. Phytonutrients are compounds found in plants that have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or other health benefits.

        • Convenience Smoothies are quick and easy to prepare, and can fit well into busy lifestyles.
        • Satiety By including high-fiber and protein-rich ingredients, smoothies can help you feel full and manage your hunger. “A well-made smoothie keeps you full, energized, and satisfied,” says Simpson. “With the right mix of ingredients, they’re low in empty calories but high in nutrients, making it easier to stay on track without feeling deprived.”
        • Customization Smoothies can be tailored to meet your nutrition needs and flavor preferences. “The possibilities are endless, so whether you’re craving pumpkin spice, mint chocolate, or tropical flavors, you can get creative and know that you are nourishing your body instead of depriving yourself,” says Hadley.

        What Are the Downsides of Weight Loss Smoothies?

        There are a few potential downsides of weight loss smoothies to consider. First, making a smoothie with higher calories or fat is easy if you aren’t keeping track of ingredients. “You can inadvertently pack a lot of calories into a smoothie if you’re not careful with the ingredients,” says Reisdorf. “Nut butters, coconut milk, or even fruit can add a lot of calories when blended together, so you may think, I’m just having a smoothie, but it could end up with way more calories than a meal.”

        Some smoothies may not be filling if they’re low in calories or nutrients, so you might get hungry soon after drinking one. Make sure your smoothie has a good balance of protein, fiber, and healthy fats to help keep you satisfied, especially if you’re using it as a meal replacement. Even with a perfectly balanced smoothie, some people still may not feel satisfied. “Drinking your calories doesn't really provide the same feeling of satisfaction as after a meal, regardless of how many calories, protein, or nutrients the smoothie might have,” says Reisdorf. “You might find yourself still hungry, which makes it difficult to stick with a calorie deficit to lose weight.”

        What Is the Best Weight Loss Smoothie Recipe?

        “The ideal smoothie formula for weight loss contains protein, fiber, and a healthy fat source to be optimally balanced,” says Mitri. “If it's missing one of these essential ingredients, you may find yourself hungry an hour later. I recommend this formula to all my weight loss clients; it works every time.”

        Mitri suggests high-quality proteins like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or protein powder. “For fiber, include a mix of vegetables and fruits, such as leafy greens, cauliflower, berries, or mango,” she adds. “For fat, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of chia, hemp, ground flax seeds, or avocado to make your smoothie extra satisfying.”

        Hadley's recommendation is similar: “I can’t tell you how many premade smoothies I’ve seen that aren’t well balanced or substantial enough to be a full meal, so you’ll be left hungry in an hour. While everyone’s needs are unique, if you're enjoying your smoothie as a meal, it should have at least 400 calories.”

        Skip juice or other sugary liquid bases and use milk or milk alternatives as your base. (Bonus: Some bump up the protein.) Overall, whole foods offer the best nutrition profile. “My favorite smoothie recipe includes kale, frozen mango, vanilla protein powder, and hemp seeds mixed with unsweetened almond milk ─ it tastes nutty, sweet, and delicious,” says Mitri.

        Are There GLP-1-Friendly Smoothies?

        Any smoothie can be GLP-1 friendly if it’s made with fiber and protein without becoming too high in calories. People taking GLP-1 weight loss medications like semaglutide (Ozempic) may choose to drink smoothies with lower fat content, as some might find it challenging to digest fat or may experience an upset stomach. While some companies promote GLP-1-friendly smoothies, the same principles that make a smoothie great for weight loss — like focusing on fiber, protein, and balanced nutrition — also apply here. You can tailor almost any smoothie to fit these criteria.

        Are weight loss smoothies safe?

        Smoothies are generally safe, but it’s always a good idea to check the ingredients to make sure they fit your health goals. “Smoothies with whole foods are generally safer and more effective than relying on processed meal replacements,” says Higgins. “They’re rich in natural fiber and nutrients, which help with fullness and long-term health.”

        Enjoying smoothies as a meal is also safe. Still, if you start replacing most of your meals with smoothies, you could miss out on essential nutrients in whole foods, such as vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients necessary for health.

        Smoothies can help you lose weight as long as you remain in a calorie deficit (burn more calories than you take in). If your smoothies are high in calories or you eat more after drinking a smoothie because you don’t feel satisfied, you could inadvertently take in more calories than you realize, making it challenging to lose weight.
        Smoothies can support weight loss because they are an easy way to get nutrients, but they aren’t the cause of weight loss. You lose weight when you reduce total calorie intake, which means you won’t regain weight if you stop drinking weight loss smoothies. “If you're eating a well-balanced, whole-food-based diet that’s within your calorie or energy targets, you won’t gain weight back,” says Higgins.
