There are a few potential downsides of weight loss smoothies to consider. First, making a smoothie with higher calories or fat is easy if you aren’t keeping track of ingredients. “You can inadvertently pack a lot of calories into a smoothie if you’re not careful with the ingredients,” says Reisdorf. “Nut butters, coconut milk, or even fruit can add a lot of calories when blended together, so you may think, I’m just having a smoothie, but it could end up with way more calories than a meal.”
Some smoothies may not be filling if they’re low in calories or nutrients, so you might get hungry soon after drinking one. Make sure your smoothie has a good balance of protein, fiber, and healthy fats to help keep you satisfied, especially if you’re using it as a meal replacement. Any smoothie can be GLP-1 friendly if it’s made with fiber and protein without becoming too high in calories. People taking GLP-1 weight loss medications like semaglutide (Ozempic) may choose to drink smoothies with lower fat content, as some might find it challenging to digest fat or may experience an upset stomach.
