Your Guide to Outdoor Fitness While Taking a GLP-1
“The medication helps with appetite and the blood sugar, but if you’re not moving, you will lose muscle and then feel tired and weaker so strength training is really, really important here,” says Meena Malhotra, MD, a double-board certified physician in internal medicine and obesity medicine, and founder of Heal n Cure Medical Wellness Center in Glenview, Illinois. “Even light aerobic activity helps (walking is great), but you need both [if you’re going to take a GLP-1].”
But before you start an outdoor workout routine, you might need a few things. New workout attire and equipment can help motivate you and help you reach your fitness goals. Read on for some of our favorite products for exercising out in the sunshine.

Vargas tested this item for our Best Warm Weather Running Gear article, and found it “lightweight and breathable.” She said the racerback allowed for freedom of movement during workouts. “It’s very comfortable for running and other workout activities,” she added. “No chafing. Super lightweight. Racerback is always a plus, since my arms can move unrestricted.”

Just note that this doesn’t have a built-in bra, which may be a plus for some (like runners who don’t want to be restricted or those who prefer a separate sports bra).

I’ve found this product less greasy than others I’ve used, and although it’s a mineral sunscreen, which is often harder to rub into the skin, it absorbs rather quickly. You can intensify most workouts by adding some weights, and you can take a lot of strength-training gear outdoors (as long as it’s not anything big and bulky). “Resistance training is the most effective strategy for preserving muscle mass during weight loss,” says Michael Snyder, MD, Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Center at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, and in-house obesity specialist at FuturHealth. “This can include free weights, machines, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises.” From weighted vests to hand weights and resistance bands, here are a few things that can help challenge your routine.

Portable Weights Won’t Mind Bringing on Runs or Walks

It can be annoying to carry weights on your run or walk, but if you want to add a little more resistance to your workout, there’s an easy solution. What Are the Benefits of Exercising Outdoors?
“Outdoor exercise provides both physiologic and behavioral advantages,” says Dr. Snyder. “Exposure to natural light helps regulate circadian rhythm, which can improve sleep quality, an often overlooked component of overall health. And, in people who may be struggling with the emotional effects of worrying about their weight and health, I have found that moving around in the world about them is a bridge into the active and engaged life that they usually desire.” Snyder says that exercising outdoors also has meaningful mental health benefits, such as reductions in stress, improved mood, and better adherence to exercise routines. “In many cases, it makes physical activity feel more sustainable and less like a prescribed task,” he adds.
Malhotra recommends walking (at a regular or brisk pace), hiking, climbing stairs or small hills, as well as adding bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and pushups (which can be done using a bench). “People overcomplicate this and then don't do it. So simple works if you do it regularly,” she says. Snyder agrees. “Start wherever you feel comfortable and safe,” he recommends. “A little goes a long way. A combination approach works best. Brisk walking, hiking, and cycling are excellent for cardiovascular conditioning and calorie expenditure. Do whatever you like and will actually do.”
Can Exercising on a GLP-1 Help Speed Up Weight Loss?
“[Exercise] can help and it will give better results overall,” says Malhotra. “The weight that's coming off is more fat and less muscle loss, plus the patients will feel better and stronger (not just ‘lighter’). So, yes, the scale may move a bit more, but more importantly, the quality of weight loss is better [with exercise].”
“I do worry about [muscle loss], especially in women over 40 or anyone already low on muscle. Prevention is not complicated, but people have to do it and stick to it — strength training, even simple things at home, and making sure you are eating enough protein.”
Why Is It Important to Exercise While Taking a GLP-1?
Snyder says that exercise is about much more than weight loss. “GLP-1 medications are highly effective at reducing caloric intake, but they do not replace the physiologic benefits of exercise,” he says. “Physical activity is essential for preserving lean muscle mass, supporting an optimal metabolism, maintaining energy, and supporting cardiovascular health.” He says that in his experience, those who take weight loss medications and those who have bariatric surgery have better long-term outcomes when they incorporate structured movement into their routines. “And, the non-weight loss effects of activity (energy, sleep, libido, mood, self-image) are critically important to support as you are taking steps to improve your quality of life during this journey.”
Malhotra agrees, reiterating that strength training is important to help avoid muscle loss while taking a GLP-1. “Even light weights, resistance bands, body weight [exercises], all of it helps, she says. “The body needs that signal to keep the muscle. If not, during weight loss [you can] lose it pretty easily. Strength training is really, really important. It doesn't have to be a perfect gym routine, just consistent.”

“I generally recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, which is consistent with standard medical guidelines, says Snyder. “That typically translates to about 30 minutes, five days a week. The goal [is] to ultimately increase to 300 minutes per week. Early on, shorter and more frequent sessions may be more realistic, particularly as the body adjusts to changes in appetite and energy intake. The key is consistency and progression over time, not perfection at the outset.”
“Walking works very well if you’re consistent with it, so it adds up,” says Malhotra. “You don't need extreme workouts for weight loss, especially when you are already on a GLP-1. So any strength training two to three times a week, and light aerobic activity.”
“Resistance training is the most effective strategy for preserving muscle mass during weight loss,” advises Snyder. “This can include free weights, machines, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises. And, movement- based activities (e.g., walking) do have a muscle support function. But, ultimately, we want targeted muscle challenging activities added.”
There are different ways of going about getting a prescription for GLP-1 medication. You can talk to your primary care doctor, who may be able to determine if you qualify. There are also telehealth websites, such as Ro, where you can get a GLP-1 prescription from the comfort of your own home if you’re eligible.
