Streptococcus (strep) is a type of bacteria that requires antibiotic treatment. Group A strep can cause strep throat, scarlet fever, impetigo, toxic shock syndrome, and cellulitis. Group B strep leads to blood infections and pneumonia (among other issues) and tends to affect newborns, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems.
