The 10 Best Cooling Sheets Our Testers Slept On
Although cooling sheets aren’t part of treatment for a medical problem, they are part of good sleep hygiene practices, and they may help you sleep cooler — and therefore more soundly — since they’re made of lightweight, breathable fabrics.
“Cooling sheets can help, especially if overheating is one of the reasons you wake up at night,” says Angela Holliday-Bell, MD, board-certified physician, certified sleep specialist, and founder of The Solution Is Sleep in Chicago. That’s because sleeping in a cool environment supports the process of falling asleep and maintaining sleep, making it more likely that you’ll have a deeper, more restorative night, she says. Part of creating that sleep-worthy environment is having the right bedding, like cooling sheets. We asked hot sleepers to test out 25 sheet sets across different brands and different fabrics. We assessed the softness, comfort, and temperature-regulating abilities of each set — these 10 came out on top.

Best Bamboo
Luxome Luxury Sheet Set
Pros
- Bamboo viscose naturally helps dissipate heat
- 100 percent bamboo viscose; not a blend
- Luxuriously soft, silky texture
- Fabric has antibacterial properties
- Cool and comfortable
Cons
- Silky draping not ideal if you prefer more crisp sheets
Key Specs
- Set includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillowcases
- Material: 100 percent viscose from bamboo
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, split king
- Colors/styles: 12
- Care: Machine wash cold on delicate cycle; tumble dry low
Editor Olivia Campbell’s teenage son found himself actually looking forward to going to bed in these sheets, instead of falling asleep on the couch. He struggles with sleeping hot and sweating, but he found that these sheets helped alleviate those issues entirely. He says that they really delivered on their promises of softness, temperature regulation, and an overall luxurious feeling. “These are much more cooling than previous sheets I’ve used,” he notes. If you prefer stiffer, more crisp sheets, these likely aren’t your best option, as they are drapey and silky.

Best Linen
Baloo Stonewashed Linen Sheets Set
Pros
- Incredibly soft 100 percent linen
- Cool and breathable
- Limits sweatiness
- Does not insulate body heat from others in the bed
- Durable and hold up well
- Envelope closure on pillowcases hugs pillows
Cons
- Lacks color choices that many other brands have
- Not available in twin size
Key Specs
- Set includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, two pillowcases
- Material: 100 percent stonewashed linen
- Sizes available: Full, queen, king, California king, split king
- Colors/styles: Four
- Care: Machine wash cool; tumble dry low
These are the softest linen sheets you will ever lie in — and that’s a promise. Made with 100 percent stonewashed linen, these are not like other linen sheets you may have tried, which, in my experience, can sometimes be on the rough side.
Linen is a great material to allow for cool sleeping, if you run a bit sweaty. These sheets are on my son’s bed. He’s still little, so I’ve spent lots of time lying on them (and, yes, sleeping). I don’t even get hot and sweaty with a kid by my side, which is a feat, since kids are known for being hot sleepers. I know from experience that these set the stage for a good night of sleep.
What really sets them apart from other sets is their feel, which only gets better with time. Practically speaking, I also like the envelope closure on the pillowcases, which allows for a nice fit on the pillow. I have the Dove Grey color, which is a beautiful soft shade of gray, although it’s worth noting that there aren’t a ton of color options. However, even after two years of use, these sheets have held up impressively, with no tears or thin spots. It’s just that now they’re even softer.

Best Percale
Brooklinen Classic Percale Core Sheet Set
Pros
- Cool
- Crisp
- Breathable
- Lightweight
- Comfortable
- Large variety of colors and prints
Cons
- Loses crisp feeling after a few nights
Key Specs
- Set includes: Flat sheet, fitted sheet, one to two pillowcases
- Material: 100 percent long-staple cotton
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Colors/styles available: 24
- Care: Machine wash cold with like colors; tumble dry low
These Brooklinen sheets are advertised as “cool, crisp, and breathable,” which is an accurate statement, says editor Ashley Ziegler, who struggles with being a hot sleeper and the night sweats that can come with it. “They feel like hotel sheets, in the best possible way,” she says.
They are made of 100 percent cotton, a naturally breathable, high-quality fabric. “This will absolutely be one of my go-to sets,” adds Ziegler. “I prefer sheets that are crisp and light, and these sheets definitely meet those needs.” The sheets boast a wide range of color and print options, envelope-closure pillowcases, and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, which means they are free of potentially harmful substances.
One downside is that these sheets do feel more worn-in, rather than crisp, after just a few nights of sleep. If you have the capacity to change your sheets often, you can bring back that just-laundered feeling midweek. Still, the cool, comfortable sleep we enjoyed ensured that this was one of our favorite sets we tested.

Best With an Optional Top Sheet
Sijo AiryWeight Eucalyptus Sheet Set
Pros
- Cooling
- Moisture wicking
- Can purchase without a top sheet
- Breathable
- Lightweight
- Soft, which further improves with time
Cons
- Texture feels “slippery”
- Wrinkles quickly after drying
- Can have pilling
Key Specs
- Set includes: Fitted sheet, optional flat sheet, two pillowcases (exceptions: twin, twin XL with one pillowcase)
- Material: 100 percent Tencel (eucalyptus)
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Colors/styles available: 14
- Care: Machine wash cold, gentle cycle; tumble dry low
Lightweight and soft, these Sijo AiryWeight sheets are a boon for sleepers with night sweats, Ziegler says: “This is a super breathable set that didn’t leave me feeling overheated.” Sijo’s eucalyptus sheets are designed to be moisture wicking to promote a dry (not uncomfortably damp) sleep, should you sweat.
A plus for this set is that you can purchase it with or without a top sheet. (A standard set includes a fitted sheet and pillowcases.) If you want the top sheet included, that’s also an option. But if you don’t — especially if it makes you too hot — we love that you’re not forced to spend money on one. “As someone who doesn’t use a top sheet, this is great,” Ziegler says.
After washing, this set continues to get softer, but it can potentially become too soft, dipping into “slippery” territory, which you may or may not find pleasant, depending on your preferences. In addition, the care instructions mention a risk of the fabric pilling over time (especially if you dry them with other items) and also that they’ll wrinkle unless promptly removed from the dryer — meaning they can be slightly finicky to care for.

Best Tencel
Slumber Cloud Performance Tencel Sheet Set
Pros
- Temperature regulating
- Moisture wicking
- Reduces overheating and sweating
- Breathable
- Comfortable to the touch
- Softer with use and laundering
- Easy to care for
Cons
- Not as soft as others
- Limited colors
Key Specs
- Set includes: Flat sheet, fitted sheet, one or two pillowcases, depending on the size
- Material: 30 percent viscose, 70 percent tencel
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, queen, king, California king
- Colors/styles available: Seven
- Care: Machine wash cold, gentle cycle; tumble dry low
Tossing, turning, sweating, and overheating are all issues Campbell regularly struggles with. “These sheets helped reduce these issues significantly,” she says, noting that she was able to fall asleep faster than usual and felt that her sleep quality actually improved. The sheets have elastic bands on each corner to keep them securely on the mattress and are deep enough to accommodate tall mattresses.
One criticism is that they could benefit from a little bit more softness (though they are not stiff or scratchy), but that was mediated by the fact that they got softer with use and after each laundering. These are a great option if you’re looking for a Tencel blend that delivers on its promise of temperature regulation.

Best Lightweight Set
Saatva Percale Sheet Set
Pros
- Cool
- Crisp, but still soft
- Airy and breathable
- Hotel sheet–like feel
- Well-priced
Cons
- Limited colors available
Key Specs
- Set includes: Flat sheet, fitted sheet, one or two pillow cases, depending on size
- Material: 100 percent cotton
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, split king, California king
- Colors/styles available: Six
- Care: Machine wash cold with like colors on gentle; tumble dry low
These comfortable, airy, lightweight Saatva percale sheets feel like something that you’d find in a nice hotel.
Personally, I like these sheets because they feel really good against your skin. They’re soft without being too soft, but they hold their shape well enough to allow for airflow while you sleep. They gently cover you without enveloping you. The sheets are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, meaning they are free of potentially harmful substances. Plus, we love that you can buy an extra set of pillowcases with the set.
Percale — which refers to the specific “basketlike” cotton weave — has long been likened to a crisp white shirt. It’s very easy to care for, though we wish there were more color options. This sheet set has a nice crispness to it, but it is never stiff, even when coming right out of the dryer. For staying cool, this set is tough to find fault with.

Best Crisp Sheet Set
Coyuchi Refined Organic Percale Sheet Set
Pros
- Crisp, clean feel
- Cooling
- Breathable
- Extra-large pillowcase
- Maintain their nice texture after washing
Cons
- Top sheet runs long
- Wrinkles easily
Key Specs
- Set includes: Flat sheet, fitted sheet, one or two pillowcases, depending on size
- Material: 100 percent organic cotton
- Sizes available: Twin, full, queen, king, California king
- Colors/styles available: 21
- Care: Cold wash, gentle cycle; tumble dry low
When you can find a cooling sheet set that immediately earns a spot in the rotation, that’s a win. And it’s exactly what happened after tester Sabrina Weiss slept in these Coyuchi percale sheets. “They have that great crisp, clean feeling of cotton sheets,” she says. Given that this is her first set of percale sheets, she says that the texture was new to her: “I am used to my sheets being smoother than this, but I am surprised to learn that I like it.”
There are pros and cons to the fit of these, however. The extra-long pillow case kept her pillow covered throughout the night, says Weiss, but the top sheet, which is extra long, made it difficult to get out from under. It’s not a major problem on its own, but it is something to consider when using them.
Also, although they keep their pleasant texture after washing, these sheets will wrinkle. Pull them out of the dryer quickly for the best chance of that crisp first-night feeling.

Best Temperature-Regulating
Sleep Number True Temp Sheet Set
Pros
- Cooling
- Heat and moisture absorbing
- Durable
- Is wrinkle resistant
- Secures well to the bed
- Will fit an adjustable bed
- 100-night tryout return policy
Cons
- Limited colors available
- No twin size
- Contains polyester in the fabric
Key Specs
- Set includes: Flat sheet, fitted sheet, two pillowcases
- Material: 76 percent cotton, 22 percent polyester, 2 percent spandex
- Sizes available: Queen, king, split king, FlexTop king, California king, split California king, FlexTop California king
- Colors/styles available: Six
- Care: Machine wash cold, gentle cycle; tumble dry low
Typically, I shy away from sheets that aren’t 100 percent natural fibers, but these Sleep Number True Temp sheets have been a welcome surprise. I look forward to the week that I put them on my bed because I rarely have an episode where I wake up in the middle of the night and dramatically throw them off my body. These sheets are designed to absorb excess heat and moisture.
Regarding durability, I’m happy to report that I’ve had these sheets for about one and a half years, and they remain good as new. There are no holes or ripped hems to worry about, and the color (mine is Pacific blue) is still vibrant. I don’t care about wrinkly sheets, but if that bothers you, know that these hold their shape rather well, owing to the small amount of spandex in the weave.
Practically speaking, these sheets also fit my bed well, and they have deep pockets and secure elastic, so they stay put too. According to the company, this helps them stay put if you have an adjustable smart bed.

Best for Couples
Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Sheet Set
Pros
- Suitable for sleepers who run hot or cold
- Keeps you at the perfect temperature all year
- Made from 100 percent cotton, making them breathable
- Incredibly soft
- Comes in a large variety of sizes, colors, and prints
Cons
- Will wrinkle
- Closely hugs your body
Key Specs
- Set includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, one or two pillow cases, depending on size
- Material: 100 percent organic cotton
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king with king cases, king with standard cases, California king, split king
- Colors/styles available: 25
- Care: Machine wash; tumble dry low
If you sleep with a partner who runs a different temperature from you, this Boll & Branch sheet set is a great choice. The 100 percent organic cotton sheets are breathable and constructed with a sateen weave, which the company explains aids in airflow. However, they’re designed to be suitable for all types of sleepers, in all weather situations, meaning they don’t run hot or too cool. (Consider them the Goldilocks of sheet sets.)
Personally speaking, these sheets have long been in my rotation, and my husband and I both love the sleep experience on them. They’re soft, provide good coverage, but won’t leave you in a sweaty, tossing and turning situation. These stay in our rotation during cold winters and hot summers alike, whether we have the air-conditioning on or the windows open.
One downside, if it matters to you, is that because these sheets are cotton, they will wrinkle. This is a nonissue for me (I love the worn-in feel), but I do know that some people like their sheets wrinkle-free. What’s more, due to their softness, these sheets drape rather than tent your body, so if you don’t like close-comfort sheets, they may not be the best choice for you.

Best Synthetic Fabric
Rest Evercool+ Cooling Starter Sheet Set
Pros
- Proprietary fabric blend created for cooling and moisture wicking
- Helped us fall asleep quicker
- Reduced sweating during sleep
- Silky soft
Cons
- Synthetic fabric
- Silky feeling not to everyone’s liking
Key Specs
- Set includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, one to two pillow cases, depending on size
- Material: Proprietary nylon spandex blend
- Sizes available: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Colors/styles available: Six
- Care: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low
“These sheets are so incredible. Truly,” raves editorial director Simone Scully. “I used to wake up sweaty in my room in the summer — but not anymore with these sheets. I had no idea how much I’d love them until I put them on. They’re very soft and have a slippery, silk-adjacent feeling, but they really do feel so nice to lie in.” We were especially impressed by how cooling they really are. “I feel like they make me actually relax too, because they’re nice and soft and cooling,” says Scully. “These are my favorites.”

We Also Tested
My husband and I couldn’t agree on two of the sheet sets I was tasked with testing: the Brooklinen Washed European Linen Core Sheet Set and the Layla Bamboo Sheet Set. I loved the Brooklinen sheets because they are lightweight and drape nicely on the body. But my husband really disliked these sheets, as he felt they weren’t soft enough (though they got softer with use). The Layla sheets, on the other hand, my husband loved, but I found them a bit too heavy. Since these sets divided opinion so much, they may not be a fit for those who share a bed. But they could work for those who like these attributes and sleep alone.
Another pick that could work for those who like sheets that lean more slippery and clingy is the Coop Cool+ Sheet Set We found them to be indeed very soft and cooling, but our tester preferred a crisper feel.
How We Tested the Best Cooling Sheets

We asked hot sleepers, some of whom wake up with night sweats, to test out sheet sets that are advertised as being cooling. We tested 25 different products. Testing involved sleeping on the sheets for a week or more, and considering characteristics like breathability, temperature regulation, moisture wicking, comfort, and feel on the skin. Testers assessed how the sheets impacted their overall sleep quality, how easy they were to care for, and how they reacted to laundering.
We also talked to experts about how cooling sheets can support a good night of sleep and how to find sheets that are suitable for your own needs. Our experts included Angela Holliday-Bell, MD, a board-certified physician, certified sleep specialist, and founder of The Solution Is Sleep in Chicago, and Shelby Harris, PsyD, a board-certified behavioral sleep medicine specialist in White Plains, New York, and director of sleep health at Sleepopolis.
What to Look for When Buying Cooling Sheets
Product claims can say anything, and since “cooling sheets” isn’t a regulated term, you’ll want to dive deeper into the details, such as sheet material and feel. “Breathable natural fibers, especially 100 percent cotton, are a great place to start,” says Dr. Holliday-Bell. “Cotton allows airflow, absorbs moisture, and helps release heat rather than trapping it, which makes it a strong option for hot sleepers,” she says.
Weave is another feature of sheets that matters for cooling. Harris recommends cotton weaves like percale: “Percale weave cotton sheets, in particular, are known for their crisp and cooling feel, making them ideal for warm nights.” Finally, some companies won’t include the thread count of their sheets (though some will), as these can be deceiving. When it comes to staying cool, high thread counts aren’t necessarily the best choice. “Moderate thread counts often breathe better than very high thread counts,” Holliday-Bell explains.
Who Needs Cooling Sheets?
Cooling sheets will certainly not fix the underlying problem causing the night sweats — you’ll want to see your doctor to rule out more concerning causes; however, they may help you stay cool while you sleep. “Cooling sheets can help, especially if overheating is one of the reasons you wake up at night,” says Holliday-Bell. Although cooling sheets aren’t magic, she says, materials that allow airflow and are moisture wicking can help you feel more comfortable while you sleep.
What Sheets Should You Avoid if You’re a Hot Sleeper?
Avoid sheets that are designed explicitly to keep you warm, especially in cool weather, such as flannel or fleece. It helps to be able to touch and feel the sheets before using them, to ensure that they don’t feel too thick to you. When purchasing online, look for generous return policies or trial periods. In addition, some people like the crisp feel of percale, while others prefer the softness of Tencel and bamboo viscose or the airiness of linen. These are personal preferences, but if your current sheets are leading to overheating or sweating, it may be time to try something new.
FAQ
Experts told us that the most breathable fabrics are made from natural fibers, such as 100 percent cotton or linen. Cooling sheets are also often made out of linen or semi-synthetic fabrics with temperature-regulating properties, or they may have a specific weave that’s designed for better airflow, like percale.
