Whether you’re spending long days at the pool or trying to get your steps in with a summer walk, it is important to use sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun's rays. Sun protection using sunscreen or protective clothing helps prevent premature aging and lowers the risk of sun cancer.

Even when we’re diligent with sun protection, sometimes we still get a little more sun than we hoped for, resulting in irritated, sun-stressed skin that is desperate for a little soothing and hydration. Aloe vera is a popular remedy for mild sunburn because it has a naturally cooling effect.

Aloe vera may help reduce redness caused by sunburns, according to Lauren Eckert Ploch, MD, MEd, FAAD, but its popularity likely stems from the immediate effect it has on irritated skin.

“Many people find aloe soothing and cooling,” she says, explaining that the added moisturizers in aloe preparations likely help with healing more than the aloe itself. “Our skin cells heal better when in a moist environment.”

This summer, we tested the most popular aloe vera gels for two weeks, evaluating them based on ease of application and their perceived effectiveness in hydrating and soothing sunburned skin. Keep reading to learn more about our top seven picks.

Our Top Picks for Aloe Vera Gel

When to Consult Your Doctor

Most mild sunburns can be treated at home by keeping the skin clean and hydrated; however, more serious sunburns should be evaluated by a medical professional. If you have a sunburn that covers all or most of your body, it is important to see a doctor to rule out a serious reaction like heatstroke or heat exhaustion. Since severe sunburns can cause blistering and peeling, a large sunburn with blisters should be evaluated by a doctor who can assess the risk of infection and give direction for treating your skin to aid recovery. Lastly, if your sunburn is accompanied by symptoms of dehydration, chills, or a fever, see a doctor to rule out heat stroke and exhaustion.

Aloderma Aloe Vera Gel

Best for Sensitive Skin

Aloderma 99% Organic Aloe Vera Gel

Pros

  • Fragrance-free formula
  • Made with high concentrations of organic aloe vera
  • Lightweight and fast-absorbing
  • Suitable for sensitive or easily irritated skin

    Cons

    • Thin consistency may not provide as much of a protective barrier as thicker gels
    • More expensive than budget aloe gels

    Key Specs

    • Featured ingredients: Organic aloe vera
    • Fragrance: No
    • Packaging: Bottle
    • Formulation type: Gel

Aloderma keeps its formula simple and relies on a high concentration of organic aloe vera. It’s a lightweight gel that spreads easily across skin. And its fragrance-free formula is less likely to irritate skin that’s already sensitive or sun-stressed.

I tested the Aloderma 99% Organic Aloe Vera Gel for two weeks, and I appreciated how gentle it felt on my skin. Unlike some aloe products that contain strong fragrances or leave behind a tacky residue, this gel felt soothing from the moment I applied it. That said, it’s a bit sticky. And while it created a nice barrier for my skin, I probably wouldn’t reach for it unless I had a sunburn.

This gel contains very few ingredients beyond aloe vera. So it’s a great option if you’re prone to irritation or you simply prefer skin-care products with minimal ingredients. While it doesn't provide the richer feel of some thicker aloe gels, we think its gentle formula makes it an excellent choice for sensitive skin that needs hydration.

ELEMIS created this misting spray with four benefits in mind: hydration, toning, refreshing, and setting makeup. It can be used before bed as part of your skincare routine, as well as before makeup for priming or afterwards to set everything for the day. Aloe vera, rooibos extract, and kefir extract make up the superfood ingredients of this spray.

I was asked to test this mist daily for two weeks, but have continued using it every night before bed as part of my skincare routine because I love this product so much. I noticed the spray goes on evenly as a light mist, and it has an immediate cooling and soothing effect. It is easy to apply, but takes a minute or two to fully absorb since it is a liquid spray.

The smell is a lovely botanical scent that is light and refreshing. My skin burns easily, and I used this to reduce redness and generally tone my skin. I think my skin looks more awake after using it, and I will keep reaching for it daily to hydrate my skin.

Health writer Erin Heger spent two weeks using this gel. She specifically noted how lightweight and smooth the gel is. It isn’t thick or greasy.

“I love that it is made in the U.S.,” Heger says. “It leaves my skin feeling hydrated and nourished. It…feels refreshing on the skin.”

Heger turned to this gel frequently during a week at the lake with her family.

Dune Suncare The Lifeguard Aloe Vera Gel

    Best for Redness

    Dune Suncare The Lifeguard

    Pros

    • Lightweight, non-sticky texture
    • Helps reduce the appearance of redness
    • Cooling and soothing feel
    • Absorbs quickly

    Cons

    • Premium price point

    Key Specs

Many aloe vera gels can feel sticky and not what you’d want to apply on the daily. We liked that Dune Suncare’s The Lifeguard after-sun gel is creamy and moisturizing, so it pulls double-duty as a daily moisturizer. Upon application, it provides a cooling sensation to help soothe sunburned skin. Our tester, health writer Nicole LaMarco, says it’s “easy to apply and absorbs super-quickly.”

LaMarco also says the formula’s slightly greenish tint, combined with ingredients like vitamin E and Tasmannia lanceolata leaf extract, helped reduce some of the redness in her skin. She did wish that the cooling sensation from the menthol lasted a bit longer. But overall, she found the product soothing, and it didn’t leave her skin feeling greasy or sticky.

Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel

    Best Budget

Fruit of the Earth Moisturizer Gel

    Pros

    • Budget friendly
    • Effectively cools sunburned skin
    • Fragrance free

    Cons

    • Slow to absorb

    Key Specs

    • Featured ingredients: Aloe vera, vitamin E
    • Fragrance: No
    • Packaging: Bottle
    • Formulation type: Gel

The Fruit of the Earth Moisturizing Gel is a great after-sun aloe with a nice cooling effect and an affordable price tag, so we chose it as the best budget aloe vera gel. A 12-ounce bottle of this aloe vera is typically about five dollars, making it the lowest-cost option on this list. Despite the low price tag, we found this gel to be effective at cooling and soothing sun-stressed skin.

During testing, I used this gel regularly to deal with a sunburn on myself and my kids when we failed to reapply sunscreen as often as we should have on a long trip to the pool. It is a thin aloe vera gel with a slightly sticky texture, and does take a little time to absorb. However, after the gel soaks into the skin, it doesn’t leave a sticky residue behind. It cools irritated skin right away and seems to do a great job of hydrating burnt skin to help with recovery after a burn.

The Fruit of the Earth Gel is a fragrance-free aloe vera gel, and we think it is a great option for sensitive skin. This is a basic, utilitarian aloe vera gel, but sometimes that is all you need, especially when you’re trying to save money.

TonyMoly I am Aloe sheet mask

    Best Face Treatment

    TONYMOLY I'm Aloe Sheet Mask

    Pros

    • Very hydrating
    • Cooling sensation helps calm sun-stressed skin
    • Easy, mess-free application
    • Leaves skin feeling refreshed and moisturized

    Cons

    • Single-use packaging
    • More expensive per treatment than traditional aloe gels

    Key Specs

    • Featured ingredients: Aloe vera extract, glycerin
    • Fragrance: Yes
    • Packaging: Individual packet
    • Formulation type: Sheet mask

If you’ve spent a little too much time in the sun and find your face could use a refresh, this sheet mask from Tonymoly is a soothing option. Infused with aloe extract and glycerin, you leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes before removing it and patting any excess serum it into your skin (no rinsing required).

During testing, the biggest drawback I found was that this sheet mask is quite wet and drippy. I got a little in my mouth, and it tasted terrible. Still, it’s very cooling and soothing after a day out in the sun. Plus, it’s a spa-like way to give your skin some much-needed hydration.

Pro tip: Put this sheet mask in the refrigerator for about half an hour before you use it for an extra-relaxing experience.

    Rahua Aloe Vera Hair Gel

Best for Dry and Damaged Hair

    Rahua Aloe Vera Hair Gel

    Pros

    • Soft hold hair gel
    • Plant-based ingredients
    • Hydrating effect
    • Provides frizz control

    Cons

    • High price point
    • Might not provide enough hold for some hair types

    Key Specs

    • Featured ingredients: Rahua oil, aloe vera, guayusa, and sugar cane
    • Fragrance: Yes
    • Packaging: Pump bottle
    • Formulation type: Hair Gel

The Rahua Aloe Vera Hair Gel provides light hold and hydration, making it our choice for the best aloe vera product for dry and damaged hair. Rahua uses aloe vera as a refreshing ingredient in the gel. It also contains rahua oil, the signature ingredient in this brand’s products, which is chosen for hair strengthening and promoting scalp health. A sustainably sourced herbal tea called guayusa provides the hair gel with antioxidants.

During testing, editor Katie Tuttle noted the gel provides a light and flexible hold. She used it regularly to handle the frizziness she experienced during hot and humid weather.

“This was easy to apply to wet hair,” she says. “The hold it provided was quite soft, without the crunchiness one tends to experience with hair gel.”

The Rahua Aloe Vera Hair Gel is a cucumber-scented gel, but our tester found that it had a faint smell that quickly dissipated. It’s also lightweight, which doesn’t create a crunchy effect when it dries, but it might not be the best choice for someone who needs a stronger hold for their hair type. We think it would be great for anyone looking to control frizz while nourishing dry and damaged hair.

Sun Bum Cool Down aloe vera gel

    Best for the Whole Family

Sun Bum Cool Down Aloe Vera Gel

    Pros

    • Easy to apply aloe vera
    • Immediate cooling effect
    • Quickly absorbs

    Cons

    • Requires reapplication to maintain cooling effect

    Key Specs

    • Featured ingredients: Aloe vera, tea tree oil, vitamin E
    • Fragrance: Yes
    • Packaging: Bottle
    • Formulation type: Gel

This aloe vera is a traditional gel, with a thicker texture that provides a nice, soothing barrier to burned skin. Even though it is a slightly sticky gel, it goes on very smoothly and quickly absorbs, so it works well under clothing. Its immediate cooling effect and ease of application make it our top pick for families.

My family tested the Sun Bum Cool Down Aloe Vera Gel for two weeks over summer break. It’s been hot and humid here in the Midwest, and we spent days at the pool trying to keep cool, which resulted in a few sunburns. We noticed this soothed our irritated skin right away. Since it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave behind a sticky residue, we were also able to reapply it regularly if we started to feel uncomfortable again.

During testing, I felt this gel did a good job of hydrating our burns. I think those of us who used it regularly didn’t peel as badly once our sunburns started to heal. One thing worth noting is that this gel does have a strong scent that is provided by the aloe vera and tea tree ingredients, which might be bothersome to those sensitive to scents.

    aloe vera lip balm

    Best Lip Balm

Sun Bum CocoBalm Lip Balm Aloe Wave

    Pros

    • Smooth, soothing lip balm
    • Enjoyable summer scent
    • Keeps lips hydrated

    Cons

    • Can be difficult to find in stores

    Key Specs

    • Featured ingredients: Coconut oil, aloe vera, shea butter, cocoa butter
    • Fragrance: Yes
    • Packaging: Tube
    • Formulation type: Lip balm

The Aloe Wave Lip Balm is a soothing balm created for recovery from sunburn, and we chose it as the best aloe vera lip balm. This lip balm is a smooth, rub-on balm that goes on easily and provides a cooling effect right away. It contains beeswax, cocoa butter, and shea butter, along with coconut and jojoba oils to hydrate the lips.

During testing, I kept this lip balm in my purse so I could reach for it whenever my lips felt dry. However, I found it did such a great job keeping my lips hydrated that I didn’t reach for it often throughout the day. I applied it once in the morning and again in the afternoon. I appreciated the cooling and soothing effect of this lip balm, which helped calm my irritated lips after a mild sunburn.

The balm has Sun Bum's iconic summer scent, and I enjoyed the coconut smell quite a bit. I think this is a great lip balm for year-round use, and I plan to continue to use it to keep my lips moist during the winter.

Other Noteworthy Aloe Vera Gels We Tried

Green Leaf Naturals Amazing Aloe Vera Gel absorbed quickly into skin, but it ultimately fell short of our top picks. Our tester noticed itching and redness after application and found the product's scent unpleasant. Because of the adverse reaction and lack of a noticeable cooling effect, we had to pass this one over.

Sun Bum After Sun Cool Down Spray was convenient to use, especially for applying aloe to hard-to-reach areas. However, our tester found the spray nozzle difficult to use and felt the cooling effect wasn't as effective as traditional aloe vera gels. It may still work well for those who prioritize convenience, but we preferred the performance of the other products in this roundup.

How We Tested Aloe Vera Gels

Before we put together our list of the best aloe vera gels, we spent time researching what type of ingredients help the skin recover from sunburns. Using that information, we compiled a list of dozens of the most popular aloe vera gels for hands-on testing. Our testers ordered these gels, documented their skin condition before use, and then tested the aloe vera gel for two weeks. Each tester paid attention to how easy it was to apply the gel, how quickly it absorbed, and if it helped with the symptoms of sunburn. They also shared anything they didn’t like about the gel or any adverse reactions they experienced.

Once testing was complete, I spoke with two dermatologists about what the skin needs after sun exposure. The experts I spoke with were:

What to Look for When Buying Aloe Vera Gels

Look for a gel that contains aloe vera but doesn’t have ingredients that will irritate your skin, suggests Dr. Vanchinathan.

“Aloe vera has natural anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness, swelling, and discomfort after a sunburn,” she says. “It also contains compounds that hydrate the skin and support its natural repair process.”

When it comes to added ingredients, consider natural ingredients that can help hydrate the skin. For example, shea butter has been found to help reduce inflammation and restore the protective barrier of the skin, making it a great added ingredient in an after-sun product.

Similarly, coconut oil helps prevent water loss from the skin, so it might help keep the skin hydrated after a sunburn.

Does Aloe Vera Gel Actually Help Sunburns?

Aloe vera helps relieve the symptoms of sunburn because it has a cooling effect on the skin. However, there isn’t enough research to confirm if it helps heal sunburns more quickly.

Because of this, and based on the advice of Dr. Eckert Ploch, we suggest treating a sunburn by first keeping it clean and dry.

“Avoid heavy ointments or thick emollients in the immediate post-sunburn period that will lock in the heat of the sunburn,” she says. “Once the discomfort wanes and the skin becomes dry or peeling, ointments and emollients can help facilitate healing.”

How Often Should I Apply Aloe Vera Gel?

Aloe vera gel is an as-needed, topical skin product, and it can be reapplied throughout the day.

Because one of the primary benefits of aloe vera is the immediate cooling effect it provides, you can reapply it when your skin begins to feel uncomfortable again. When reapplying frequently, keep an eye out for an adverse reaction. This is rare, but it includes symptoms of dermatitis or an allergic reaction, such as a rash or increased itching.

Does Aloe Vera Gel Have Other Uses?

Aloe vera is used in a variety of ways in addition to managing the symptoms of a sunburn. For example, a topical gel can be used to calm other types of skin irritation, including rashes, minor cuts, insect bites, and razor burn. While there is limited research, it may also help improve acne and offer relief from radiation burn.

Aloe vera is also available as an oral dietary supplement. While there isn’t enough research to confirm its effectiveness, it is most frequently taken to manage IBS, ulcerative colitis, and obesity.

    FAQ

How do I cure a sunburn?

Sunburns take time to heal. If you have a mild sunburn that doesn’t require medical attention, we suggest treating your sunburn with an oral pain reliever or anti-inflammatory, while keeping it clean and dry. Once sunburn begins to peel, keep it hydrated and use aloe vera to reduce discomfort.

The best aloe vera for a sunburn is one that provides a cooling effect. It shouldn’t contain irritants that could increase discomfort or irritate the skin further.

Aloe vera is generally safe for use on babies or children when applied topically, but it is not safe to give a baby oral aloe vera. We suggest using it in small amounts at first and paying attention to symptoms of an adverse reaction, such as a rash or itchiness.
