To me, summer’s not summer unless I’m taking advantage of the long, warm days with plenty of outdoor workouts. My season usually includes early evening trail runs, oceanside hiking, swimming, lots of dancing, and yoga in the park. Given that outdoor exercise is associated with improved mood, it’s no wonder that I look forward to summer every year.

Working out in the fresh air also refreshes an overworked, fatigued mind, leaving people feeling more invigorated.

“Many people feel psychologically better in the warm weather and are more motivated to exercise,” said Jason Snibbe, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist in Los Angeles.

“Put some comfortable clothes on, grab a water bottle, and go for a beautiful walk outside. It is the best exercise, and it will make you feel better every time you do it.”

If you’re ready to have fun while staying fit all summer long, this guide will help you get there. We tested more than 100 types of workout equipment and gear, for weeks or even months, to help you make the most of the season safely and comfortably. Whether you’re looking for the perfect bike for cruising in park or a hat that keeps your face protected from the sun’s harsh rays, we’ve got you covered.

Apparel

tank top and running shorts
Everyday Health

Having the proper attire for summer sports and exercise routines can help you stay cool and comfortable, so that you get the most out of your workouts. When shopping, you’ll want to go for light colors and loose, breathable, moisture-wicking clothing, advises Jay Atul Shah, DO, medical director of the Sports Medicine Center at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center in California.

running shorts

Best Shorts

Speedwork Mid Rise 2 1/2-Inch Run Short

Pros

  • Made from ultralightweight fabric
  • Design promotes airflow
  • Has a hidden pocket
  • Cute design inspires us to work out

Cons

  • Short length not for everyone
  • No flat seams

When the heat hits, I’m always thrilled to pull out Athleta’s Speedwork Mid Rise Run Shorts. They are the comfiest shorts I’ve ever owned, and the ultra-airy recycled nylon and polyester fabric keeps me incredibly cool, no matter how hot it gets. The short length is perfect for me, allowing for plenty of bare leg, unencumbered by fabric. The wispy outer layer allows plenty of airflow, while an internal shell keeps me shielded and protected. I also like the hidden internal pocket and the hidden drawstring that gives me a perfect fit.

The shorts are super easy to take care of. Quick-dry and wrinkle-resistant, if they end up crumpled in my drawer, I can still throw them on and look attractive, which makes me excited to work out. Just keep in mind that these shorts might be a bit too short for some people. Also, they don’t feature flat seams, which can help prevent chafing. I’ve never had any issues with them though.

Crz yoga seamless workout tank top

Best Top

CRZ YOGA Seamless High Crewneck Racerback Tank

Pros

  • Airy fabric lets your body breathe
  • Racerback design promotes airflow
  • Soft and comfy
  • Wide variety of colors available

Cons

  • Doesn’t have a built-in bra
  • White-colored top is a bit see-through

The CRZ YOGA Seamless High Crewneck Racerback Tank is a summer staple you can wear for running, yoga in the park, or a weekend hike. Made from breathable polyamide and elastane, it’s moisture-wicking, breathable, and lightweight, all the features you want in a good summer workout top. I love the racerback design. Not only does it allow my shoulders to move freely, without worrying about slipping straps — it also keeps my upper back and shoulders feeling cool and free. Mesh vents in the back and armpit areas add extra breathability.

I’m a sucker for cute workout clothes, and this top gets my approval on multiple levels. It’s form-fitting but not clingy and comes in beautiful, vibrant colors, like a cornflower blue and aquamarine. Those two color options are on my shopping list now, since the white one I have now is slightly see-through. Also, if you want a top with a built-in bra, look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Breathable materials
  • Has lots of cushioning and support
  • Gives plenty of energy return
  • Very lightweight

Cons

  • On the bulkier side
  • Traction not the best

I firmly believe that you will not find a better everyday summer running shoe than the Asics Novablast 5. Lightweight, breathable, plush, and comfy, they include everything you could want in a warm-weather trainer. The springy sole offers ample cushioning to protect my joints as I strike hard concrete. Because of this cloudlike comfort, I’m able to run for longer. The soles also offer plenty of energy return, which helps propel me forward and makes my runs easier.

A mesh upper provides exceptional airflow — I never overheat in these. Since the mesh is flexible, I can easily move my forefoot and wiggle my toes, so I don’t feel restricted in the summer heat. Overall, I feel light on my feet and happy in these running shoes. But keep in mind that the plush soles make them bulkier than those of some competitors. I also found that the traction isn’t as good on rocky or slippery trails, compared with some other options, but these shoes are so breathable, lightweight, and comfortable that I don’t mind.

Sun Protection

Everyday Health
Shielding yourself from the sun’s harsh rays is a no-brainer during the warmer months.

Hats, sunglasses, and sun-protective clothing are all summer staples. When purchasing sunscreen, look for a sweat- and water-resistant sports formula with at least SPF 30 and both UVA and UVB protection, Dr. Shah says.

Reapply sunscreen every hour whenever you’re outdoors for prolonged periods, advises Brent Marshall, EdD, associate professor and program director of the sports medicine program at the University of Western States in Portland, Oregon.

bask suncare mineral sunscreen

Best Sunscreen

Bask Suncare SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen Spray

Pros

  • Doesn’t leave a white cast
  • Moisturizes skin
  • Won’t melt off in the heat
  • Great for sensitive skin

Cons

  • Pricey, considering the size
  • Spray nozzle clogs
If you’re on a quest to eliminate hormone-disrupting chemicals from your sunscreen, you may be familiar with the goopy formulas and white casts that many mineral-based sunscreens leave behind.

Bask Suncare SPF 30 Mineral Fragrance-Free Non-Aerosol Spray is a much-needed exception. This spray sunscreen is lightweight, goes on clear, and is easy to apply, says writer and editor Ashley Ziegler. It’s actually moisturizing too. “It seems to stay put, and it doesn’t dry out my skin,” she reports. “I actually also tried this on my 5-year-old with sensitive, dry, eczema-prone skin, and it didn’t cause any irritation.” We think that the cost for a 5.5-ounce can is steep, but it’s worth it if it’s within your budget. You may also want to note that the nozzle can clog easily.
lululemon fast and free running hat

Best Hat

Lululemon Fast and Free Running Hat

Pros

  • Lightweight and airy
  • Has a long bill
  • Moisture-wicking sweatband works well
  • Can be adjusted for a perfect fit

Cons

  • Smooshes hair
  • Doesn’t have a ponytail opening
If you’d rather not bother with sunscreen on your scalp, hats are essential.

The breathable and feather-light Lululemon Fast and Free Running Hat will keep you protected all season long. I’m obsessed with mine. Unlike other running hats I’ve owned, this one adjusts in the back to fit my small head and prevents it from flying off into the wind. Four-way stretch fabric also molds to my head and helps it stay put. The long bill keeps the sun’s rays off my face, while the moisture-wicking sweatband keeps my head and hair cool and dry. It doesn’t hurt that this hat is adorable. My only criticism of this hat, or any hat for that matter, is that it flattens my curly hair. So, I make sure to restyle after I wear it. I would also love it if it had a ponytail opening, so that I could keep my hair up while wearing it.
buff coolnet uv multifunctional neck galter

Best Neck Gaiter

Buff CoolNet UV Neck Gaiter

Pros

  • Has UPF 50 sun protection
  • Super versatile
  • National park design is great for summer
  • Lightweight and quick dry

Cons

  • A bit large
  • No hemming on the edges
If you’d like to add another layer of fashionable sun protection, the Buff Coolnet UV Neck Gaiter is the way to go. With a UPF rating of 50, it blocks 98 percent of the sun’s rays and is considered an excellent form of protection.

Wear it around the neck, as a headband or head covering, as a face cover, a hood, and more. You can even soak it in water before putting it on, to really cool off on hot days.

I love the Rocky Mountain National Park design. The colors are vibrant, and I love the visual reminder of the great outdoors, which is what summer is all about. The gaiter is quick-dry and lightweight, making it easy to take care of. I’ll be bringing this gaiter on all my summer hikes and to music festivals to protect me for hours in the summer sun. Just keep in mind that it feels quite long when wearing it as a gaiter, though I’ve had no issues with it staying put. The lack of hemming on the edges makes me question if it will fall apart after extended use, but in my research, I’ve not come across that as an issue.

Kazu toner sunglasses

Best Sunglasses

Tracksmith Kazu Tourer Sunglasses

Pros

  • Retro aesthetic is great for summer style
  • Has oil and fingerprint-resistant lenses
  • Won’t fog up, thanks to side panels
  • Blocks light from the sides

Cons

  • On the pricey side for sunglasses
  • Not as minimalist as some competitors

Inspired by a 1960s and 70s alpine mountaineering aesthetic, thse stylish, versatile, and well-crafted Kazu Tourer Sunglasses will be a pair I wear all summer long. They feature shatterproof lenses that repel oil and fingerprints, great for active lifestyles and sweaty hands.

Small side shields block peripheral sunlight, keeping me protected. Mini airflow vents along the upper and side edges of the lenses help prevent fogging. I also like how sturdy they are — they’ve held up well for about a year.

Given their cute aesthetic, I feel equally comfortable wearing them on mountain hikes, brewery stops afterward, or even just as everyday sunglasses. They’re also lightweight, but not as much as those of some competitors, so keep that in mind. These also cost more than $300, so you’ll want to take good care of them.

Equipment

headphones, bicycle and jumprope
Everyday Health
I love switching up my routine in summer, so fitness gear I can use at the park, pool, or trail is great. The right equipment is easy to tote around, letting you easily make the most of extended sunlight hours and warm temps.

Elite Jumps Jump Rope

Pros

  • Easy to tote around
  • Easy to adjust to the right length
  • Rope made from durable material
  • Affordable

Cons

  • May not last a long time
  • Tangles at first
Jump ropes aren’t just for kids. With this lightweight yet durable version from Elite Jumps, I can get a serious cardio and full-body strength training session quickly and easily at the park or on the patio.

I love how you can easily adjust the rope length in less than a minute. I’ve definitely seen competitors that require much more effort. It’s a budget-friendly purchase, and it can give you a stellar workout. The payoff from just 10 minutes of jumping rope is comparable to that of 30 minutes of moderate exercise.

The rope got tangled around my feet during the first few days of using it, but I eventually got the hang of it.
Eaglebear black bicycle

Best Bike

Eaglebear Black Bike

Pros

  • Lightweight but durable
  • Very easy to ride
  • Handlebars are ergonomically positioned
  • Has dual brakes

Cons

  • Seat may be uncomfortable to some
  • Not a beginner bike

Biking is a wonderful way to explore parks and trails or to commute during the longest days of the year. The 12-speed Eaglebear Black Bike comes with a choice of tires for pavement or trail, so you can hit the routes you love the most. Writer Raki Swanson loves how well-constructed and sturdy it is, despite its lightweight design. Importantly, “This is so darn easy to ride,” Swanson says. “It is so smooth, like a hot knife through butter.”

The bike also offers plenty of storage, including three water bottle mounts, front and rear rack mounts, and a top tube mount. The bike is very speedy, with well-positioned handlebars and dual brakes for serious stopping power. But given its speed, the bike may be intimidating for beginners. Additionally, some may find the seat uncomfortable.

H20 audio multisport waterproof headphones

Best Headphones

H20 Audio Multisport Waterproof Headphones

Pros

  • Bone conduction tech lets you listen in the water
  • Won’t block sound from your environment
  • Easy to control
  • Great sound quality

Cons

  • Bluetooth doesn’t work in the water
  • Sound may be quiet on the road

I love working out with music, which is something I couldn’t do while swimming until now. The H20 Audio Multisport Waterproof Headphones, which let me listen to music without blocking out my environment, ensure that I never get bored while swimming laps again.

These headphones use bone conduction technology, which means the vibrations travel through your skull bones and are transmitted directly to the inner ear. The built-in MP3 player holds 8 gigabytes of music, allowing me to listen to my favorite tunes whether I’m in the pool or in the ocean. And since they don’t block my ears, I can still be fully aware of what’s going on around me. Plus, they’re comfy to wear and easy to use. Note that, while these headphones also have Bluetooth connectivity, you’ll need to listen to pre-downloaded music when using the MP3 player. You can use these headphones outside of the water too, but I prefer to more traditional ones on land, as these are a bit quiet.

Hydration

Everyday Health
Staying hydrated is always important, but especially in the summer months and when you exercise.

Before stepping outside to exercise, Shah says that you should prehydrate with around 20 ounces of water, two hours beforehand. Then, you should aim for about 16 to 20 ounces of water every hour during intense activity, Dr. Marshall advises. Adding electrolytes to your water when working out for long periods can also help you stay hydrated, says Dr. Snibbe. The following picks can help you stay cool and hydrated before, during, and after your workout.
Teton oasis trail runner hydration backpack

Best Hydration Pack

Teton TrailRunner 2L Hydration Pack

Pros

  • Compact and lightweight
  • Ergonomic and comfortable
  • Great value for the price
  • Has a lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Only stows a few essentials
  • Tubing is easy to damage

Teton TrailRuner 2L Hydration Pack is an affordable, convenient, and comfy way to stay hydrated, wherever your summer plans take you. Weighing less than a pound and measuring 16 by 10 by 3 inches, it is ultralightweight and compact. Made from durable rip-stop material, “it’s comfortable and convenient,” says writer and editor Olivia Campbell. “It’s well designed to be ergonomic and seems pretty good quality.”

The pack has a pocket and bungee straps to secure snacks and essentials, and it is adjustable at the shoulder, chest, and waist to stay secure. And at less than $30, with a lifetime warranty, you won’t find a better deal on a hydration pack. Given its small size, you’ll want another option if you’re looking for more storage space. You may also want to note that some users report that the water tube damages easily.

Zulu stainless steel water bottle

Best Water Bottle

ZULU Powerfill Pro Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Pros

  • Keeps drinks cold for up to 30 hours
  • Made from stainless steel and BPA-free
  • Has interchangeable spouts
  • Is dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Difficult to clean
  • Hard to get the cap off
Purchasing a nice water bottle for the summer months is a no-brainer. The ZULU Powerfill Pro Stainless Steel Water Bottle is leakproof, triple-insulated, and it “kept my water super cold during my workout on a hot day,” says editor and writer Alexandra Klausner. She loves that it’s free of bisphenol A (BPA), which may affect hormone levels.

The bottle is available in 24-, 32-, or 40-ounce options and comes in 12 pretty colors. Our research found that the spout and cap can be difficult to clean, due to the tiny crevices and parts, and it requires a bit of force to get the cap off. Still, this is a well-crafted bottle that will keep you hydrated and cool.
Transparent labs hydrate electrolyte powder

Best Electrolyte Powder

Transparent Labs Hydrate Electrolyte Formula

Pros

  • Contains a variety of electrolytes
  • Freeze-dried coconut water helps absorption
  • Free of artificial sweeteners
  • Tastes delicious

Cons

  • Taurine may not appeal to all users
  • Senactiv may not appeal to all users
If you want to stay hydrated and feel great all summer, you should have an electrolyte powder on your shopping list. Transparent Labs Hydrate Electrolyte Formula contains sodiumpotassiumcalcium, and magnesium, along with freeze-dried coconut water for enhanced absorption. The inclusion of taurine and Senactiv makes the formula unique: Taurine is an amino acid that may improve exercise performance and reduce recovery times.

Senactiv is a blend of two herbs that may boost endurance and muscle recovery.

I feel more alert and hydrated during workouts after drinking this formula. And I have no problem drinking it daily because the peach-mango flavor tastes absolutely delicious. Plus, I avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague, and this formula contains none. All of that said, if you want a straight electrolyte mix without herbal or amino acid energy boosters, you’ll want to find an alternative.

What Are the Benefits of Exercising in Warm Weather?

“Exercising in warm weather can be easier because there’s increased blood flow to your muscles and tendons,” says Snibbe. “When there’s warm weather, your body tends to be more flexible and less rigid.”

Additionally, you have better insulin sensitivity in the heat, which helps balance blood sugar more easily, Snibbe says.

Increased sun exposure during the summer months also helps with vitamin D synthesis, Shah explains.

Vitamin D builds strong bones and improves mood and the immune system. Shah also notes that people tend to stick with their routine more during the summer months, so they’ll reap the benefits of regular exercise, such as better sleep and lowered risk of dementia, heart attacks, or strokes.

What Are the Risks of Exercising in Warm Weather?

Working out in warm weather increases the risk of dehydration, overexertion, fatigue, muscle cramps, and heat-related conditions such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion, Marshall warns. Take a slow and gradual approach to working out in high temps, he advises. The increased demand that heat places on the body can exacerbate chronic health conditions, so check with your doctor before working out in high temperatures.

Look for shaded biking and walking routes, and try working out in the park or under tree cover, Marshall suggests. You can also consider exercising during cooler times of the day, like early morning or evening. You’ll want to take hydration very seriously, he says. Additionally, he recommends staying mindful of your limits: “It’s better to miss or shorten a workout due to weather than end up needing urgent medical care for overexertion,” Marshall says.

What Are the Best Activities for Warm Weather Exercise?

Whether it’s walking, biking, or jogging, do whatever motivates you to get moving, Marshall explains. But modify your routine to accommodate the summer sun. “Keep in mind that concrete and asphalt tend to hold a lot of heat, so try to stay in parks or other vegetated areas,” Marshall says.

Marshall also says that low-impact activities like yoga and strength training are great when the weather is too warm for intense activities. Swimming can also help you feel refreshed when temps are soaring.
