Like many competitors, the shorts are made from breathable, lightweight polyester and spandex, are moisture-wicking, quick-dry, and have some stretch to make your jogs comfy. Moisture-wicking, quick-dry fabrics are “crucial for warm weather conditions, wet weather training, and effective sweat-wicking,” Rodgers says. “These pull moisture away from your skin and dry quickly.” 

    We love the size inclusivity — the shorts run from XS to 4X. A zippered right pocket gives you room to safely stow keys and a card. “Whenever I have a key with me, I want to make sure the pocket closes,” said Hislop. Our only gripe with these shorts is that they’re made from two-way stretch rather than four-way stretch material. This means it won’t feel as flowy and easy to move around as some competitors. Some users also say the shorts run big, so consider sizing down.

    Keep in mind that research on compression garments is mixed. A 2023 study found that runners who wore compression shorts had an endurance boost, while a 2025 analysis of earlier research found no benefit to performance when wearing any type of compression garment.

     However, many runners use them and say they help them feel lighter and more supported. “I do believe [compression shorts] help post-run with recovery,” Hislop says. “I do think that [they] make it feel like you are supported and everything is staying in place.” The tight fit also means the fabric is less likely to rub and chafe, Hislop says.

    The shorts have silicone grippers to keep them from riding up, but note that some users found they weren’t effective. And while having a full five drop-in pockets is handy, we wish at least one of them had a secure closure.

    “Running shorts should sit comfortably at your natural waistline without being too tight or requiring constant adjustment,” Rodgers said. “You should be able to move freely through your full range of motion. Try doing some high knees and lunges when trying them on.”

    “You need to move when trying running shorts on,” says Hislop. “You wouldn’t buy a pair of running shoes without running around the store in them to see how they feel. It is the same with a pair of shorts. If they bunch up on a run around the store, they will absolutely be annoying on a five-mile outing.”

    Why Should I Wear Shorts With a Liner?

    Some runners feel more comfortable without underwear — and liners can help them feel more supported doing so.

    Shorts with a built-in liner provide more coverage when you’re wearing shorts that are loose and flowy, Hislop says. And “having a liner in the shorts also keeps the shorts where they should be. Sometimes shorts without will ride up, and who wants to be pulling their shorts down mid-run?”

    There may even be benefits to going underwear-free.

    “The more layers you have, the more of a chance there is for chafing and bunching to occur,” Hislop says.

    When shopping, look for liners with antimicrobial properties to keep you hygienic on sweaty runs.

    What Length of Shorts Should I Wear?

    According to Rodgers, “shorter shorts (2- to 4-inch inseam) are ideal for speed work and racing, where you want zero restriction, while medium length (5- to 7-inch inseam) shorts work better for easy runs and longer distances, where comfort matters more than performance.”

    Longer shorts could be more beneficial for you if you tend to chafe. Chafing, a painful skin condition, results in redness and rashes and can be caused by friction between the skin and fabric or skin-to-skin contact. Heat, humidity, and moisture all make it easier to chafe.

    “Do your thighs touch?” asks Hislop. “If yes, then look for a longer short — 6 inches or longer. You can also look for shorts with a longer fitted liner. Personally, this is my route as I like a shorter short, but want leg coverage.”
