40 Arthritis-Friendly Gifts That Are as Thoughtful as They Are Useful
Different forms of arthritis have different symptoms, but since they all cause inflammation of the joints, they present similar challenges. “Arthritis can lead to limitations in mobility and make everyday tasks like dressing, cooking, and chores more challenging,” says Simran Malhotra, MD, a palliative care physician and wellness coach.
The best gifts for people with arthritis provide practical relief while adding comfort and joy to their everyday lives. After testing more than 400 products and consulting four experts, we landed on these favorites for people with arthritis.

CushionLab Pressure Relief Seat Cushion
Prolonged sitting can exacerbate arthritis symptoms. Movement helps lubricate the joints, so sitting for long periods of time can lead to increased pain, stiffness, and swelling. Of course, it’s not always possible to avoid extended sitting, but there are other ways to help. “The perfect gift for someone who is a computer worker, a gamer, or just wants good posture for everyday seated activities would be an ergonomic chair that addresses postures and comfort,” says Julie Landis, DPT, an ergonomist. With the CushionLab Pressure Relief Seat Cushion, your loved one can turn any chair into an ergonomic chair. Its shape cradles hips and thighs, evenly distributing weight and helping users sit up straight. The cushion is made from soft, supportive memory foam for extra comfort, and it has a breathable, machine-washable cover. Best of all, it’s suitable for home, office, or car, so they can use it anywhere.

July Carry-On Light Expandable Luggage
A good suitcase can make traveling easier for anyone with joint pain. At less than 5 pounds, this carry-on from July is one of the lightest options out there. “I have gotten to be a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to finding lightweight carry-on bags,” says Scully, our editorial director, who’s also a frequent flier. “The suitcase is one of the lightest I’ve used,” she said, citing the rollability and durability as standout features. With the brand’s signature SilentMove 360-degree spinner wheels, it was designed to make traveling smoother and quieter than ever, and according to Scully, it lives up to the hype. “It rolls very well and allows you to move quickly if you need to sprint across the airport,” she says. Rolling bags are incredibly beneficial for those with arthritis, since they’re easier to maneuver without putting stress on your joints. Additionally, the July Carry-On Light has an ergonomic, adjustable handle that’s comfortable to hold.
How We Chose the Best Gifts for People With Arthritis
/arthritis-friendly-gifts-ugc-test-1440x810.jpg?sfvrsn=841ca224_3)
To find the best gifts for people with arthritis, we conducted hands-on testing, consulted with experts, and did extensive research. First, we tapped our roster of writers and editors, many of whom are healthcare professionals, to test various options. We tested more than 400 products across multiple categories, including skin care, sleep aids, kitchen appliances, fitness equipment, and stress-relief tools. Testers evaluated each item based on features such as functionality, effectiveness, ease of use, and comfort. From there, we selected the best options for people with arthritis, looking for products that help with pain, stiffness, mobility, and everyday tasks.
We then consulted several experts to get their input on arthritis-friendly gifts, including Simran Malhotra, MD, a palliative care physician and wellness coach; Robin Valadares, an orthopedic physiotherapist at Niagara Orthopaedic Institute in Ontario; Milica McDowell, DPT, founder of Clearwater Physical Therapy in Montana; and Julie Landis, DPT, an ergonomist. I used my background and expertise in occupational therapy to find products that are particularly beneficial for joint protection, range of motion, pain relief, and flexibility. Finally, I looked at reviewed research studies to ensure the efficacy and safety of these products.
What Is Arthritis, and How Does It Affect Daily Life?
“Arthritis is a broad definition of several neuro-musculoskeletal conditions that tend to cause joint pain, inflammation, loss of range of motion, and decreased physical abilities for individuals,” says Landis. The impact it has on daily life can often depend on which joints are impaired, but generally speaking, it can limit movement and flexibility, making many everyday activities more difficult.
Arthritis that affects the weight-bearing joints, like the knees and hips, can limit gross motor movements, such as walking, climbing stairs, or bending. In small joints, such as the hands or fingers, arthritis can impair fine motor tasks, including writing, opening jars, or buttoning clothing.
What Makes a Gift Arthritis-Friendly?
Arthritis-friendly gifts can help alleviate common arthritis symptoms such as pain and stiffness while also encouraging movement. Items that feature ergonomic and nonslip handles can make daily tasks like cooking and gardening easier and more manageable. Items that promote relaxation and exercise are also beneficial, such as heated blankets, massage tools, and fitness equipment. Gifts for someone with arthritis should prioritize comfort, pain relief, and functionality. Look for items that reduce stress, enhance mobility, and make daily activities easier, but be sure to consider their specific needs and limitations.
“Look for items with ergonomic designs, nonslip grips, or features that require minimal effort,” says Valadares. Impaired dexterity and fine motor skills can make getting dressed more difficult, so adaptive clothing and dressing aids are especially helpful. Heat and cold therapy, regular exercise, and stress management can also help alleviate arthritis pain and stiffness. “Any gift that encourages movement or provides comfort can be a thoughtful choice for someone with arthritis,” says Dr. McDowell.
