Editor Picks for Sleep

I love sleep, and after years of not getting nearly enough while raising three kids, I now prioritize quality sleep whenever possible. (Did you know sleep deprivation can contribute to an array of chronic physical and mental health risks?) As someone in perimenopause who finds it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, and who has recently developed an autoimmune disorder that causes joint pain, I’m always looking for sleep products that cultivate comfort, enhance relaxation, and reduce pressure points.

I want to help everyone get great sleep, so I take my role as pillow testing manager at Everyday Health very seriously: analyzing the data I collect on our testers’ sleep styles and matching them with a pillow I hope they love. I like to think of myself as the pillow fairy. I also test bed sheets, mattresses, pajamas, massagers, tea, and other sleep-related products, so I know the brands that stand out for performance and quality. Here are my must-have picks to help you create the bedtime oasis of your dreams.

Purple freeform pillow

Purple Freeform Pillow

I discovered Purple pillows when orchestrating our pillow test and immediately fell in love. The brand’s proprietary honeycomb grid cradles and supports the head perfectly, while preventing overheating and allowing just the right amount of sinking in. I’ve used both the DreamLayer Pillow and Freeform, and you really can’t go wrong with either. The difference is largely whether you want to remove pillow layers or foam pieces to find your perfect height. I love them so much, I gave most of my family Purple pillows last Christmas.

Bedgear Storm cuddle curve performance pillow

Bedgear Storm Cuddle Curve Performance Pillow

As a side sleeper, I adored the curved shape of this pillow; it helped keep the pillow in place under my head all night while keeping my neck in alignment and supporting my chin. I’d never tried any pillow shape other than rectangle, so this was quite a revelation. While it’s not adjustable, there is a range of loft sizes to choose from and a helpful interactive “find your fit” tool on the website to guide your purchase. This pillow stays cool all night and has remained perky throughout use.
Sleepnumber ClimateCool mattress

Sleep Number ClimateCool Smart Bed

I tend to view technology on traditionally tech-free products with side-eye, but in the case of this Sleep Number bed, I will gladly admit to being wrong. This mattress is amazing. If you tend to wake up hot and/or sweaty, and find most “cooling” mattresses only last for a couple hours, you may want to invest in a Sleep Number ClimateCool. It has a built-in fan, so it is the only mattress I’ve found that actually offers sustained cooling. In the app, you can track your sleep and control the firmness and fan. I like that you can set the firmness to respond to your movement and set the fan to start while you’re sleeping. My husband has the fan on his side set to start at midnight and run for a few hours so he doesn’t wake up in the night from overheating.
Rest Evercool cooling sheet set

Rest Evercool Cooling Sheet Set & Comforter

Hot sleepers rejoice! If you’ve been disappointed by sheets claiming to offer all-night cooling, know that hope is not lost. “I sleep hot, and it’s gotten worse as I get older,” editor Lili Ladaga explains, but these Rest Evercool sheets “stay icy cold all night, and the pillowcases are pure heaven.” She’s so smitten, in fact, that she’s slowly replacing all of her bedding with Rest Evercool. The comforter is another win for folks who want to be covered, but often can’t stand the heat. “I can’t stress enough how much I love these products,” Ladaga enthuses. “I have the fitted sheets, pillowcases, and comforter. I just wish they had more colors!”

Hue cotton pajama pants

Hue 100% Cotton Pajama Pants and Tees

Who knew I’d have a favorite pajama brand by age 40?! No matter the season, you’ll find me in Hue pajamas. I have full-length pants, capris, long-sleeve tops, and short-sleeve tees from Hue, and they’re always the first ones I reach for in the drawer. I have several of these 100 percent cotton options, and many of the cotton/modal blend pants and tops. I am very picky about pajamas: I prefer breathable fabrics in non-clingy cuts. Plus, collared PJ shirts make my neck feel hot. Hue PJs tick all the boxes of loose, but not too baggy, soft, but not too thick, in breathable natural fabrics.

YogaSleep dohm sound machine

Yogasleep Dohm Nova White Noise Sound Machine

If you need white noise to sleep or are looking for a noise machine to drown out distracting sounds like noisy neighbors or snoring spouses, editor Katie Tuttle recommends this Yogasleep Dohm Nova Sound Machine: “I love that it provides consistent, fan-like white noise. It muffles outside noises and helps me sleep.” Tuttle has found that other white noise apps or devices have a pause in the sound whenever the recorded noise loop starts up again, which she feels is incredibly distracting. This machine offers the constant noise she’s looking for, and it also helps calm her pets during storms.

Therabody SmartGoggles

Therabody SmartGoggles

An eye massager is a great way to reduce screentime while you wind down for the night. I loved these Therabody SmartGoggles and found the product really helps me relax and destress before bed. It even has a custom “sleep prep” program, plus it’s easy to change the settings while you’re wearing it. The massager has a 100 percent blackout design and adjustable compression, heat, and vibration. Find an array of soothing sounds in the Therabody app to complement your experience. It’s easy to take on the go if you need help relaxing at hotels or relatives’ homes since it’s foldable and comes with a carry case.
