Confession: I have, shall we say, a checkered history with indoor gardening. Houseplants? My home is full of them. But I’ve always envied the people who, by the time the risk of frost has passed, have flats of sturdy little tomato seedlings and lush herbs ready for planting. Even my attempts at windowsill basil plants have ended in failure.

So when I had the chance to test indoor gardening systems, I was curious: Could I also grow herbs indoors? Or start seedlings for this year’s garden, instead of buying plants at the local gardening center? And would I really reap any benefits from indoor gardening? It turns out, the benefits go beyond having a little extra garnish on hand.

“When fresh produce grows right in your kitchen or living area, it lowers economic, logistical, and post-harvest constraints that often limit consumption,” says Most Tahera Naznin, PhD, associate professor of urban and indoor agriculture at the University of Nevada, Reno. “There’s also a psychological component: Growing food fosters a greater bond with it. People cherish and use what they grow for themselves, which can lead to healthy eating habits.”

So with some trial and error, the two plant-iest people at Everyday Health (editorial director Simone Scully and I) tested a range of indoor gardens. We tested kits meant to give you a head start on the season, and ones that let you grow an entire harvest indoors. Some were soil-based, while others were hydroponic setups. These are the ones we liked best.

Seed starting, as I mentioned, is intimidating for me. So when I heard about the LetPot Seed Starter, I was intrigued. This setup comes with a tray and lid, soil plugs, a heated base, and a grow light.

To start, you fill the tray with water, drop the soil plugs into the tray, and add your seeds (which aren’t included). The LetPot has app connectivity, which lets you monitor the soil temperature. It also has automated settings based on what plants you’re hoping to grow. I chose basil and mint.

The seeds began to sprout in about five days, at which point I removed the cover. The soil plugs are a bit difficult to dig into; they come with divots, but if you want to cover your seeds, it’s helpful to have a little gardening soil on hand to sprinkle on top. I was initially skeptical of the moisture levels, but so far, my seedlings are growing steadily, with no signs of wilting or rot.

You do have to purchase new soil plugs after using up what comes with the set. (Regular gardening soil would become too waterlogged.) And eventually you have to transplant your seedlings to a new container. But if you’re just starting out, and you love the instant feedback provided by the app, this is a fun way to test out your indoor gardening skills.

When I first assembled my Lettuce Grow Farmstand, my immediate thought was that it looked like something from The Jetsons. The vertical hydroponic tower can hold up to 36 plants (I opted for the 24-plant version) while taking up just a few square feet of floor space. That makes it one of the highest-capacity systems we tested. It can be used indoors with Lettuce Grow's Glow Rings or outdoors in a sunny location. Plus, its modular design lets you start small and add tiers over time, if you wish.

Unlike many countertop systems that are limited to herbs and lettuce, the Farmstand can support everything from leafy greens to tomatoes, peppers, and beans. (The dwarf tomato plants are, frankly, adorable.) I also appreciated that the seedlings arrive partially grown in small plugs that are ready to insert into the stand, which takes some of the uncertainty out of getting started. Once established, the recirculating hydroponic system requires relatively little day-to-day attention beyond monitoring water and pH levels and adding nutrients. (I made it part of my Wednesday morning routine.)

I started harvesting lettuces within four weeks, and since then have enjoyed a ready supply of leafy greens along with parsley, dill, and cilantro. The growth rate has been impressive; plants I started at the same time and planted outdoors are about half the size of the hydroponic ones. I also like that the water recirculates every hour on the hour; it’s like having a grandfather clock, with gently gurgling water rather than a Westminster chime.

There are inevitably a few trade-offs. Assembly took me a while to figure out, and the system becomes extremely difficult to move once the 20-gallon (gal) reservoir is filled. (You’ll probably want to spring for the dolly.) It’s also one of the most expensive options we tested. But if you want to harvest enough produce to actually supplement your grocery shopping, the Farmstand is a choice that truly impressed me.

For someone who’s new to indoor gardening, figuring out the setup can be the most intimidating part. What kind of soil do I use? How often do I water? Do I need to fertilize? Of course, water itself doesn’t have the nutrients needed to sustain growing plants indefinitely. For a more traditional soil-based setup, the Vego Garden EZ Self-Watering Herb Planter covers all the basics. It’s set up more like a window box and has a reservoir underneath that you fill with water. As the plants mature, their root systems wick up the water, giving them just the amount they need. A small indicator rises or falls with your water level, so it’s easy to see at a glance if the Vego Garden needs to be topped off.

The setup doesn’t come with seeds, soil, or a grow light. But you can pull the drain plug and convert it to an outdoor planter, if you wish. I filled mine with potting soil and started some basil seeds. While I initially worried that the soil wasn’t providing enough moisture, the instructions said this could take a couple of days, and they were correct.

I like that I can see when the water levels are low. And now, my seedlings are several inches tall and just about ready to start acclimating to the outdoors. If you want a no-frills setup that lets you move your herbs indoors or out as needed, this is our top choice.

My first thought when I saw this setup was that it was like a bar cart, only for plants. Vego Garden’s Two-Tier Grow Light Garden comes with two sets of LED grow lights and is made of sturdy metal shelving. It has wheels so you can move it around. (That’s nice if you need to get closer to a power source.)

This is more of a setup for plants; you need to provide containers, soil, and the plants themselves. It has no app connectivity, but you can tap the lights to cycle through settings, including seedlings, greens, fruit, herbs, houseplants, and microgreens. The two-tier setup also means you can support two types of plants at once.

It was quite easy to assemble (it took me less than an hour), and the grow lights attach via magnets. It also comes with little magnetic cord-keepers to help minimize unsightly cords. If you like the idea of a countertop garden and you don’t want to miss out on app connectivity, the ēdn SmallGarden provides an excellent compromise. The wood and galvanized-aluminum body give the ēdn a warmth that indoor garden systems often lack. And the app lets you set grow light timing, sends water alerts, and provides growing advice.

The SmallGarden uses a pod system, and each unit can fit up to 10 pre-seeded pods. While it won’t provide big yields, it’s not meant to. It’s made for the indoor gardener who wants a snip of this and a stem of that, all without taking up too much precious counter or shelf space.

“This was definitely the prettiest of the indoor gardens I tested,” says Scully. “The sleek wood design made it almost look like a piece of art. Plus, I could either use the pre-seeded pods or plant my own seeds in unseeded pods; I liked that flexibility.”

The SmallGarden is an attractive, compact piece that’s great for ensuring you always have, for example, some fresh basil on hand. One caveat: While you can use your own seeds, you need to purchase one of ēdn’s “Plant Your Own Seedpods” in order to do so.

But it’s a great choice if you’re short on space and don’t want to miss out on growing your own herbs.

How We Tested Indoor Gardens

To put together this list of indoor gardens, we assembled them, set them up in our own homes, and evaluated each based on how well it performed its function. For example, when testing a system intended to start seeds, was it easy to control the seedlings’ environment? Did the grow lights have different settings, and were they obnoxiously bright? Did the systems make it easy to monitor your plants? We used these factors to determine which ones would be best for a variety of uses.

In addition using to my experience and Scully’s with growing plants indoors, I interviewed three experts for their perspective on what to look for, what to expect, and how to troubleshoot common issues that can arise with indoor gardens:

What to Look for When Choosing an Indoor Garden

When choosing an indoor garden, you’ll want to consider a few factors:

  • System Type Generally speaking, you’ll have two types of indoor gardens to choose from: hydroponic and soil-based. Hydroponic systems use water and nutrients to grow plants, while soil-based systems use soil. “Hydroponic systems are typically more efficient and predictable,” says Dr. Naznin. “Plants grow faster and more uniformly when nutrients, water, and light are managed, resulting in higher yields in a smaller space.” However, if problems arise, your plants’ condition can degrade swiftly if the underlying issues aren’t addressed. In contrast, Naznin finds soil-based models are more forgiving. “The soil serves as a buffer for nutrients and moisture, making them more resilient to minor errors,” she says. “However, they can be less efficient, require more area, and have greater inconsistency in watering, pests, and overall plant performance.”
  • Plant Capacity and Yield Before purchasing an indoor garden, consider your goals. Do you want a handful of fresh herbs to garnish a pasta dish? Or do you want something that will cut back on your weekly grocery runs? A smaller unit can provide a few snips of herbs or a handful of lettuce for a salad. But if you have loftier goals, you’ll need something bigger.
  • Size As we found during testing, some of these indoor gardens take up a lot of space. If you have the space for a full tower, go for it. But even relatively compact countertop systems may wear out their welcome. It’s best to have an idea as to what you’re willing to put up with long term.
  • Maintenance Systems that use pods can be an almost entirely hands-off endeavor, while others require a lot more monitoring. If you want something you can mostly ignore, consider getting a fully automated model. However, if you like the experience of fussing a bit with your plants (like me), growing a soil-based indoor garden can be very rewarding. It all depends on your tolerance for setbacks or even failures.
  • Features Many indoor gardens now come with app connectivity, reminders, and guided growing programs. These features can be helpful, especially for beginners, but they’re definitely not essential. If you like the added security of having an app to turn to for guidance or to help you monitor your plants’ progress, choosing a smart system may be the way to go. Just keep in mind, a simpler setup can still yield great results.
  • What Do You Actually Want to Grow? Finally, think about what produce you’ll actually use. Herbs and leafy greens are the easiest and most rewarding to grow indoors. As for fruiting plants like tomatoes or peppers, it’s possible to grow them indoors, but they tend to need more space, stronger lighting, and a lot more patience. Starting with plants you already cook with regularly will help keep your indoor garden from becoming an unused waste of space.

How Do Indoor Gardens Work?

Plants don’t need much to grow, but they do need the right balance of water, light, and nutrients. Getting that balance correct is where things can get tricky. “That’s how you kill a plant — either over- or under-watering,” says Wolfe. With soil-based systems, she recommends checking the soil before watering. If it still feels damp, hold off. Over-watering is often the bigger issue, since soggy roots can lead to rot.

Hydroponic models simplify some of this by taking care of the water and nutrients for you. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely hands-off. Plants still need monitoring and the right conditions to thrive.

Light is another key factor, and it’s often where indoor setups fall short. Most indoor gardens rely on built-in grow lights to replace sunlight, and many include timers to keep plants on a consistent schedule. Still, not all grow lights are created equal. “Many systems look bright but do not deliver enough light or PPFD [photosynthetic photon flux density], which is the amount of usable light reaching the plant,” Agrey says.

 Without enough light, plants can grow slowly, become weak, or fail to produce much at all.

So while indoor gardens are designed to make growing easier, you still need to ensure you’re providing plants with the basics. Even with automation, your success still depends on giving your plants enough light, the right amount of water, and a little ongoing attention.

Are Indoor Gardens Actually Worth It?

Whether an indoor garden is worth it depends on your habits and goals. If you’re more of an occasional cook or you’d rather take a trip to the store than tackle the responsibility of caring for plants, indoor gardening may not be for you. Even the most-automated systems aren’t completely hands-off.

“Compared to outdoor gardening, the workload can be lower, but it depends heavily on the type of system,” Agrey says. “Smaller countertop systems often require more-frequent attention. In some cases, you may need to add water and nutrients daily, or even twice a day, depending on what you are growing.”

It’s also important to keep in mind the limitations of gardening indoors. “These systems are not designed to meaningfully supplement full meals on a regular basis,” Agrey says. “They are better suited for smaller amounts, such as garnishes, fresh herbs, or occasionally enough greens to make a small salad for one or two people.”

However, if you regularly cook with fresh herbs and greens, having a supply on hand can cut down on food waste (no more slimy cilantro in the crisper drawer) and money spent on blister packs of fresh herbs. (That bunch of cilantro probably cost you at least $3.)

It can also be a way to get you to enjoy more fresh produce. “Indoor gardening systems can significantly increase the consumption of fresh herbs and leafy greens, with important implications for nutrition and phytomedicine,” Naznin says. “In terms of public health, increased availability [of] fresh produce is closely linked to higher intakes of micronutrients, dietary fiber, and bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and carotenoids.”

 Aside from the health benefits, the simple act of tending to a garden and harvesting food you grew yourself can be extremely rewarding.

What Can You Realistically Grow in an Indoor Garden?

The keyword here is “realistically.” As we mentioned earlier, some plants adapt better to typical indoor conditions than others. “The plants that tend to grow best for beginners, and in indoor systems in general, are leafy greens and herbs. These include lettuce, basil, arugula, kale, dill, Swiss chard, and parsley,” Agrey says. “They are fast-growing, require less space, and are more forgiving, which makes them ideal for people just getting started.”

Naznin agrees that leafy greens and herbs are the most beginner-friendly plants if you’re just starting out. “Crops such as lettuce, spinach, kale, and arugula grow quickly — often in three to four weeks — and do not require much light or complex care. Herbs like basil, mint, parsley, and cilantro are also excellent choices, because they are highly robust and can be harvested continuously,” she says.

On the other hand, fruiting plants such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers often prove more difficult to grow indoors. “Unlike leafy greens, they require pollination to produce fruit. Since there are no natural pollinators indoors, you need to pollinate them by hand, which adds an extra step and requires more attention,” Agrey says. Naznin also points out that “these species have high photosynthetic light saturation points … and require precise nutrient supply, especially potassium and calcium, to promote fruit development.”

Do indoor gardens need sunlight?
​​Not necessarily. Most indoor gardens are designed with built-in LED grow lights that provide the light plants need for photosynthesis, so they don’t require direct sunlight to function. That said, light is still one of the most important factors for healthy growth. “There are a lot of plants that need full sun, which means six-plus hours a day,” says Wolfe. Grow lights can mimic those conditions indoors, but they need to be strong enough and positioned close to the plant to be effective. Some models may look bright but don’t deliver enough usable light, which can lead to slower growth and lackluster harvests.
It depends on the plant and the system, but most herbs begin to sprout within about a week and are ready for light harvesting in three to five weeks. Fast-growing options like basil and dill tend to produce sooner, while others may take a bit longer to mature.

Most indoor gardens are designed to be low-maintenance, but they’re not completely hands-off. Expect to refill water, add nutrients, and do some occasional cleaning to keep your indoor garden running smoothly. “Indoor garden systems can work very well and can be relatively easy to use, but it is important to understand that you are still growing plants,” says Agrey. Smaller countertop models may need more-frequent attention — sometimes daily water top-offs — while larger setups can often go a week or more between maintenance. But once you get into a routine, upkeep is usually minimal, often taking just a few minutes a week for basic care.
Indoor gardens themselves are generally safe, but the plants you choose to grow may not be. Some common plants (like tomato plants) may not be pet-safe, so it’s important to check each plant before bringing it into a home with pets.

 You’ll also want to consider placement. Keeping your indoor garden out of reach can help prevent pets from chewing on leaves or knocking over the garden. (I’ve had to come up with some creative solutions to keep my cat out of my Vego box, for example.)
