The 12 Best Cooling Mattresses That Had Us Sleeping Sweat-Free Through the Night
“A cooling mattress may support physical recovery, proper spinal alignment, and should provide comfort while resting,” says Jeremy S. Smith, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Hoag Orthopedics in Orange and Irvine, California.
To find the best cooling mattresses, we slept, snored, and snuggled on 21 mattresses in our own homes, observing firmness, comfort, and cooling capability. We also spoke to a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and a neuroscientist at a sleep institute to understand how cooling mattresses work and everything you need to know when selecting one.
Here are the cooling mattresses that kept us, yes, you guessed it, cool and comfortable at night.

Best for Hot Flashes
The Purple Mattress
Pros
- Open grid top offers impressive cooling capability
- Even support, balance, and contouring
- Easy setup
- Wide range of sizes available
- 10-year warranty
Cons
- GelFlex texture may be bothersome to certain sleepers
- 9.25-inch profile height may be too short for some
Key Specs
- Mattress type: Foam
- Materials: SoftFlex cover, foam, GelFlex grid
- Firmness: Medium
- Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, and split king
- Height/thickness: 9.25 inches (all sizes)
From hot flashes to night sweats, a cooling mattress like The Purple Mattress can offer nightly relief and comfort. It’s a foam-based mattress with five layers designed to balance and support the body without trapping heat. It features a SoftFlex cover for breathability; three different types of foam layers for contouring, comfort, and sleep stability; and a unique 2-inch nontoxic, moisture-wicking GelFlex grid top for cooling.
Editor Katrina Cossey loved the cooling design and medium firmness, feeling immediate pressure relief on her shoulders and back. “I felt even support all night and never felt hot,” she says. However, the raised texture of the grid took some getting used to and may be bothersome to folks with texture sensitivity, she adds.
The Purple Mattress is available in traditional sizes as well as twin XL and split king. It arrives tightly rolled in the signature Purple bag, and the built-in handles make it easy to unroll on the bed. The queen size weighs 88 pounds (lb) and is 9.25 inches high, which may feel too short for some. On the other hand, the company also offers a 100-day trial, free expedited shipping, and a 10-year warranty, so you can test it at home before committing.
Throughout testing, Cossey found the mattress to live up to its claim; she slept peacefully, soundly, and coolly. “If you sleep hot, a Purple mattress is definitely worth the investment,” she says.

Best for Back Pain
Helix Midnight Luxe
Pros
- Impressive lumbar support
- Excellent cooling capability
- Minimal break-in period
- Reinforced edges provide side support
- Free shipping, returns, and exchanges
- Available in short queen and RV king sizes
Cons
- Medium firmness may feel firmer to some

- Firmness: Medium
- Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, short queen, king, California king, split king, RV king
- Height/thickness: 13.5 inches (all sizes)
The Helix Midnight Luxe touts extra support for shoulders and hips, which is great for side sleepers, and has reinforced edges that give the mattress a larger feel on the bed frame (so you don’t feel like you’re falling or rolling off the sides). DeVito was impressed with the immediate cooling feel. “I usually get very hot while I sleep, and every time I move around, I feel a nice cold patch under me,” she says.
Chronic lower back pain at night is another concern for DeVito, but that wasn’t the case. “I liked the firmness of it because I felt like it did relieve pressure from my back while I slept,” she says. The Midnight Luxe is only available as a medium-firm, but Helix offers other models if you prefer a softer or firmer mattress.
As someone who sleeps on their side, back, and stomach, DeVito was comfortable in all sleeping positions. Even after throwing out her back, she noticed an improvement in her back pain in one night. “By the next day and even the day after, I truly felt no back pain. It definitely helped support my back while I slept.”
If you’re on the fence, the mattress has a 120-night trial, plus free shipping, returns, easy exchanges, and a lifetime warranty.

For those who prefer all sleeping position options, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling is for you. It’s a hybrid made of seven layers, features five varieties of foam for ultimate comfort, and is available in soft, medium, or firm.
The seven layers include a supportive base; 8-inch, individually wrapped premium steel coils; foam for support; memory foam for contouring and pressure relief; copper-responsive foam for movement; quilt foam for moisture-wicking; plus an optional cloud pillow top with cooling foam to absorb and release heat to keep the body cool.
“I can sleep on my back and side, and it’s very comfortable and cool,” says Cossey. “It supports every part of my body, and I don’t wake up in any pain, or with hot flashes, sweating, or overheating at all,” she adds. Similar to the Purple Mattress, this mattress has a textured pillow top that some may find bothersome or take some getting used to.

Imagine dialing in the perfect sleep-temperature climate night after night. Well, thanks to the Sleep Number ClimateCool, now you can. It’s a “smart” mattress with two individual sleep climates for unique, customized firmness and coolness that’s controlled by an app or a remote (sold separately). “The app is fun because it monitors your sleep and health signs, and you can make adjustments to the bed while you’re in it,” says editor Olivia Campbell.
It’s made from several types of foam layers that provide breathability, coolness, adjustability, and comfort. You can customize firmness and temperature and change them nightly depending on what suits your body. “There’s also a responsive comfort feature that automatically adjusts to your body pressure throughout the night,” says Campbell.
We also love the built-in fan. Adjust the temperature up to 15 degrees F cooler on each side, and the integrated cooling fan has a timer for low, medium, and high settings for ultimate comfort.
The Sleep Number mattress is designed to last 25 years and has a 10-year limited warranty and a 100-night sleep trial. One of the only drawbacks for Campbell is the mattress’s soft edges, which make her feel like she could slide off the bed. It’s also pricey, but it delivers, she says. “This was a wildly luxurious first experience with a smart bed, and truly the only type of cooling I’ve found in a mattress that actually works,” she says.

Best Soft Mattress
BedInABox Azul Cooling Memory Foam Mattress
Pros
- Medium-soft for a softer sleeping experience
- Accommodates all sleeping positions
- 1,000-lb weight limit
- Includes 2 plush pillows
- Free shipping and returns
Cons

- Mattress type: Memory foam
- Materials: Memory foam, soft knit cover
- Firmness: Medium-soft
- Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, RV queen, king, RV king
- Height/thickness: 11 inches
For sleepers who prefer a softer mattress, the BedInABox Azul Mattress is easy to rest on. It’s an 11-inch medium-soft memory foam mattress featuring three types of foam for cooling, contouring, and spine alignment.
Editor Nicole Bonaccorso tested the twin mattress in her son’s room. “I’m a fan,” she says. It’s very comfortable, but it’s on the softer side, which can sometimes make turning a little harder. But she can comfortably rest in any sleeping position, which suits her sleeping preferences. “It’s great for pressure relief, and the mattress is cooling,” she adds, thanks to the proprietary cooling foams.
The Azul is CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified, meaning it’s third-party tested for chemicals. Like its name, the bed arrives in a box, is ready for action once unrolled, and can accommodate up to 1,000 lb. If you’re not in love with the Azul, BedInABox offers a 120-night trial, a 20-year limited warranty, plus free shipping and returns, and the two complimentary plush pillows are a nice bonus as well.

Best Firm Mattress
Serta iComfort Mattress
Pros
- Numerous firmness levels available
- Made for back and stomach sleepers
- 5-zone response with plush and firm coils
- Excellent motion control
- Compatible with most bed frames
Cons
- May be too firm for side sleepers
- Tester noted some hip stiffness
Key Specs
- Mattress type: Hybrid
- Materials: Memory foam, plush and firm coils, CoolFeel fabric
- Firmness: Plush, medium, firm
- Sizes: Twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Height/thickness: 11.5, 12, 13, 14 inches
The Serta iComfort Mattress is a firm hybrid mattress with five support zones and two types of coils. It touts a cool-to-touch fabric and two types of breathable latex foam: a graphite-infused memory foam that redistributes heat and another memory foam that minimizes motion, contours the body, and cradles pressure points. The mix of ergonomic plush coils and firm coils is strategically placed for optimal spine alignment. The iComfort Mattresses are available in several firmness levels and profile heights, ranging from a standard 11.5-inch firm mattress to an enhanced 14-inch plush mattress, so buyers have plenty of options.
“I really liked the motion control design of the mattress,” says writer Holly Klamer. “The mattress is comfortable to sleep on, and it doesn’t cave or move around, even if your sleep partner is tossing and turning,” she says. Klamer’s husband — who works on his feet all day — was impressed by the supportive quality and body alignment. It’s designed for back and stomach sleepers, so while Klamer finds it too firm for her liking as a side sleeper, it’s perfect for her husband’s larger frame and back issues.
Serta offers white-glove delivery, a 100-night trial, and a 10-year limited warranty. Unlike many of the mattresses on this list, Serta has stores nationwide, so you can take one for a test drive before committing.

Best Dual-Sided
Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress
Pros
- Organic materials
- Firm but buoyant, supportive feel
- 5 ergonomic zones
- Numerous eco certifications
- Excellent customer service
- White-glove delivery service
- Lifetime warranty, 365-night returns
Cons
- Requires a solid bed frame or bunky board
- Shorter height profile
- Longer break-in period
Key Specs
- Mattress type: Latex
- Materials: Latex, certified organic New Zealand wool
- Firmness: Luxury Plush or Gentle Firm
- Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, split-king, California king, UpperFlex king
- Height/thickness: 10 inches (all sizes)
For the past five years, my husband and I have loved our Saatva 14-Inch King Classic. But we’re just as smitten with our Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress. The Zenhaven is a 10-inch, dual-sided, firm latex mattress that boasts the excellent quality and craftsmanship for which Saatva is known. It’s made from five layers of organic, natural latex and wool and features five ergonomic, vented airflow channels and zones for breathability, pressure relief, and lumbar support.
Each side is clearly labeled as “Luxury Plush” or “Gentle Firm,” and I like knowing that if one side isn’t quite right, we can flip and try a different firmness. While the adjustment and break-in period can be up to eight weeks, we adapted quickly. This mattress gently contours my body, providing a firm yet buoyant feel alongside excellent support and spinal alignment. I sleep easily on my back with no pain, and my body stays cool throughout the night.
My experience with Saatva customer service was impressive and timely as well. When I reached out with a question, an agent called me back within an hour, left me a detailed voicemail with her direct line, and sent a follow-up email, too.
There are a few caveats to keep in mind. You’ll need a solid bed frame or bunky board (no slats), and the mattress profile is 10 inches, so it’s shorter than many other mattresses on this list.
However, the white-glove delivery service, removal of your older mattress, lifetime warranty, and 365-night exchange return policy are bonuses. The Zenhaven is also GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard), eco-INSTITUT, and Greenguard Gold certified. We rest more easily knowing this mattress meets the highest eco-friendly, nontoxic standards, especially when snuggling with our littles.

Best Cooling Pillow Top
Nolah Evolution Mattress With Cooling Pillow Top
Pros
- Cool-to-touch pillow topper
- 9 layers, including 4 types of foam
- Edge-to-edge zoned coils
- Plush, cooling and cloud-like feel, yet supportive
- Touts several eco-friendly certifications
- Built-in handles
Cons
- Made to order, so shipping may take a few weeks
- It’s heavy to unroll
Key Specs
- Mattress type: Hybrid
- Materials: Foam, coils, GlacioTex pillow top, organic cotton cover
- Firmness: Plush, luxury, firm
- Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, split king
- Height/thickness: 14 or 15 inches with cooling pillow top
From the moment I slipped into the Nolah Evolution Mattress with Cooling Pillow Top, I knew it met all my sleep criteria. At 15 inches high, it’s one of the tallest profile mattress heights on our list. It’s made from nine layers, including 8-inch individually wrapped, edge-to-edge, strategically placed coils and four types of foam for comfort and support. The Nolah has an optional pillow top, which was one of the coolest-to-the-touch that I came across.
It has all the components I covet in a mattress: a comfortable, plush, cooling pillow top that feels almost weightless. It contours to my body while providing pressure relief without any sinking. I’m typically a side sleeper, and sometimes I roll onto my back (never my stomach), which can be troublesome due to lower spine misalignment. However, the Nolah was so comfortable for back and side sleeping.
The Nolah arrives in a box, and it can be a bit unwieldy to lift, remove the excess plastic packaging, and unroll, but the built-in handles help. Every Nolah mattress is designed, assembled, and shipped in the United States, so shipping can take a few weeks. The Nolah Evolution is Greenguard Gold and CertiPUR-US certified, and meets strict health-based and environmental criteria for low chemical emissions.
We keep this mattress in our guest room, and I happily opt for it anytime my husband snores. It’s truly like sleeping on a cool cloud.

Best Hybrid
Beautyrest Black Hybrid XCS
Pros
- Plush and contouring hybrid with excellent cooling capability
- Two types of coils
- BlackICE Max Cooling technology
- Excellent motion separation
- White-glove delivery
Cons
- May be too high for certain sleepers
- Pricey
Key Specs
- Mattress type: Hybrid
- Materials: Coils, memory foam
- Firmness: Plush, medium, firm
- Sizes: Twin XL, queen, split head queen, king, split head king, California king
- Height/thickness: Up to 15 inches (varies by model)
The mattress is available in several models and firmness options. My daughter and I slept on the queen, Series 4 Medium, which boasts 30 percent more cooling than the Series 3 model. The minute I slipped into the sheets, I immediately felt my body gently imprinting on the surface without sinking in, creating a cocoon-like feel. Every time I shifted positions, my limbs would feel cool to the touch.
I can attest it certainly lives up to its promise of motion separation, especially when sharing a bed with a restless 9-year-old sleeper. It’s nearly 15 inches high, so it’s on the higher spectrum of mattress height, and you may need to purchase deep-pocket sheets.
It’s pricey, but if you’re still not convinced, Beautyrest offers free shipping, white-glove delivery, free mattress removal, and a 100-night trial. And, like its name, I rested beautifully.

Best Customizable
Sleep Number ComfortMode Lux
Pros
- Dual-sided adjustable firmness
- High-density foam
- Offers advanced relief for hips
- Solid edge support
Cons
- Requires a firm and flat bed
- Adjustable bases are not returnable
Key Specs
- Mattress type: Adjustable

- Firmness: Adjustable

- Height/thickness: 11 inches
There’s a good reason we’re including a second Sleep Number mattress model in our guide. The Sleep Number ComfortMode Lux is a remote-controlled adjustable mattress for the ultimate personalized sleep experience. It touts several layers of cooling and custom foam to draw heat away and utilizes adjustable air chambers to perfect your firmness preferences. The result is a cooling mattress that’s comfortable and customizable in moments.
“I absolutely love how this bed can have firmness adjusted on both sides,” which makes it ideal for partners who can’t agree on firmness, says writer Jacquelyn Smith. She was also impressed with how well the mattress alleviates aches and pains, especially in her hips and back. “The overall pressure relief is great throughout the night, and I wake up less and sleep cooler,” she adds.
There are a few things you need to know about ComfortMode Lux: It requires a flat and solid bed base, so slatted bed frames won’t work. Sleep Number offers integrated and adjustable bases as well as platform beds for an additional cost, but they’re not returnable. However, like the Climate Cool Smart Bed, the ComfortMode Lux is made to last for years and comes with a 10-year limited warranty and a 100-night sleep trial. Plus, you can shop in person at one of the many nationwide Sleep Number stores before committing.

We know how disruptive having a sleep partner toss and turn at night is, which is why the Titan Plus Elite Mattress is our pick for a peaceful (and cooling) night’s sleep. This hybrid mattress is engineered for larger sleepers. It has six layers that mitigate sagging and sinking, touts a 1,000-lb weight limit, and offers edge-to-edge support, so it’s ideal for larger folks who cherish motion isolation.
It features individually wrapped 8-inch coils and 0.75-inch microcoils for extra stability, has three types of foam layers, and is finished with a GlacioTex cooling pillow top for ultimate contouring, durability, movement control, pressure relief, and cooling.
Cossey and her husband love sleeping on their Titan Plus Elite Mattress. Cossey’s husband has residual back pain from his time serving in the Army, and after resting on the Titan, his pain has drastically subsided. “I appreciate how every part of our bodies feels supported by the medium-firm feel, with no additional back pain,” she says. “It also keeps us both cool at night, especially for my husband, who often sleeps hot.”
The mattress arrives in a box and weighs between 80 and 150 lb, depending on the size, so count on having help setting it up. If you’re uncertain about the Titan Plus Elite Mattress, it comes with a 120-night trial, a lifetime warranty, and is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association.

- Excellent motion isolation
- Plush 13-inch profile height
- Antimicrobial cooling cover
- Eco-certified
Cons
- Pricey
- May feel too soft for some

As parents, we know how valuable a supportive mattress is for you and your children. From bedtime stories to tending to nightmares, a mattress should be comfortable for everyone, no matter your household sleep tendencies. That’s why we chose the Nectar Premier Hybrid Mattress for my 7-year-old son (and as our best cooling mattress for kids).
The Nectar Premier is a hybrid mattress that boasts extra pressure relief and over 50 percent more cooling power than the Nectar Classic Hybrid, which earned a spot in our best mattresses guide. It touts six layers, a plush 13-inch profile height, and an antimicrobial cooling cover. It includes four distinct layers for motion isolation, responsive support, and pressure relief, along with 8-inch, edge-to-edge, individually wrapped innerspring coils that offer stability and extra motion isolation.
I can attest that this mattress is wonderful for children and adults alike (no matter how strict we are with sleep, we still somehow end up in my son’s bed). The medium-firm mattress supports our various sizes and weights, although it is a bit soft for my husband. The pressure-relieving memory foam offers support and comfort no matter our sleeping position, and the motion isolation is excellent despite shifting bodies.
The Nectar is available in traditional sizes as well as twin and twin XL sizes, which are ideal for smaller beds and bodies. As a parent, I love that the Nectar Premier Hybrid is CertiPUR-US certified, 100 percent fiberglass-free, and comes with a lifetime warranty and a 365-night trial.
While the Nectar is pricey, we think it’s worth it. The Nectar is not only approved by the American Chiropractic Association but also parent- and kid-recommended by our team.

How We Tested the Cooling Mattresses
To build this guide of the best cooling mattresses, we slept on more than 20 cooling mattresses in our own homes, including hybrid, foam, and adjustable types. We considered temperature regulation, overall comfort, support, pressure relief, firmness, and cooling technology. We observed sleep quality, back and neck comfort, and morning stiffness as well as material, motion isolation, mattress profile height, and mattress edge support.
We also interviewed Jeremy S. Smith, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Hoag Orthopedics in Orange and Irvine, California, and Chelsie Rohrscheib, PhD, a neuroscientist and head sleep researcher at Wesper, a nationwide home sleep diagnostics company for sleep apnea. These two experts provided insights into how cooling mattresses can promote healthy sleep and what to consider when purchasing a new cooling mattress.
What to Look for When Buying a Cooling Mattress
When purchasing a new cooling mattress, consider the mattress type, materials, firmness, and size.
- Mattress Type Traditional cooling mattresses are typically made from innerspring coils or layers of foam and cooling gels — or a mix of the two — called a hybrid, and topped with a soft, breathable cover or pillow topper. These mattresses typically fit on top of a bed frame or bed platform. Other mattress types may be dual-sided, with one side firmer and the other softer. Adjustable mattresses allow users to control firmness or even coolness, and certain models have split sides, so each partner can adjust their own mattress preferences. This style tends to require a specific bed frame, typically sold by the same manufacturer.
- Materials In addition to innerspring coils and foams, cooling mattresses feature various cooling elements, such as latex gels and foams, pillow toppers, open-grid top layers, cleverly designed air vents or chambers, and breathable materials to promote airflow.
- Firmness Mattresses are available in various firmness levels, such as plush, medium, or firm. Many mattress manufacturers use a 1 to 10 scale to rate firmness, with 1 being the softest or most plush and 10 being the firmest. This helps customers understand universal firmness levels.
- Size/Thickness Mattresses come in all sorts of sizes, including twin, full, queen, and king. Some manufacturers offer more varieties, such as a twin XL, split king, or RV king. Mattresses also come in different height profiles and may run from around 9 to 15 inches high. A mattress height is a personal preference. Some people may gravitate toward a specific height for aesthetic purposes or to fit the scale of a bed and bedroom. “Thinner mattresses or lower-profile beds may be better for children or older adults who need to get in and out of bed more easily, whereas thicker mattresses often provide more cushioning and support but sit higher off the ground,” says Dr. Rohrscheib. If you do opt for a thicker mattress profile, you may need to invest in deep-fitted sheets. Make sure to measure your bed and double-check your measurements before ordering a mattress.
How Does a Cooling Mattress Work?
Cooling mattresses are made of materials that actively pull heat away from the body, allow more airflow than traditional mattresses, or contain materials that do not heat up, helping them stay cool throughout the night, says Rohrscheib.
Some products are better at cooling and staying cool than others, she says. “It’s important to consider the actual cooling technology, such as phase-change materials or breathable designs, rather than just gel-infused foam,” she advises. Memory foam tends to hold heat, whereas hybrids, latex, or grid-style mattresses allow for better airflow and stay cooler, she adds.
You can generally tell if your mattress is retaining heat. “If you feel like you sleep on something that is very dense, it is most likely holding in heat,” says Dr. Smith.
Why Should People Sleep on a Cooling Mattress?
Some people naturally sleep hot, and others may sleep warmer due to medical conditions, certain medications, or hormones. Some individuals who naturally sleep hot may have differences in thermoregulation during sleep stages such as REM, explains Rohrscheib: “Medical conditions, such as cancer or hormonal disorders, and certain medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), can cause overheating and sweating during the night.” Sleeping in a colder room or on a cooling mattress can help prevent overheating by making it easier for the body to maintain a cooler temperature, she says.
Will a Cooling Mattress Help With Perimenopause and Menopause Symptoms?
How Firm Should a Cooling Mattress Be?
Mattress firmness is usually a personal preference, so it’s important to try out the mattress before committing to ensure it provides enough support and comfort, Rohrscheib says. “Many people find medium-firm mattresses provide a balance of support, comfort, and airflow,” she adds.
A softer mattress surrounds the body more and traps heat as the body sinks in, explains Smith. “If you are sleeping on something a bit firmer, the airflow around the body will be higher,” he says.
Does a Cooling Mattress Require Any Extra Care?
Smith recommends avoiding mattress pads, which can “trap a lot of heat around the body while you rest,” he says. If you prefer a mattress protector, Rohrscheib likes breathable, thin covers that won’t trap heat or impede the cooling features. Additionally, she recommends regularly washing sheets, rotating your mattress every few months to help maintain even wear, and avoiding heavy bedding, which may affect the cooling performance.
