A kidney infection is a type of urinary tract infection that most often develops due to bacteria reaching your kidneys. It can cause symptoms that include fever, lower-back or side pain, and passing bloody, foul-smelling, or cloudy urine. Antibiotics can treat kidney infections, but hospitalization may be necessary for a severe or persistent infection.
