7 Dessert Recipes Made Healthier With Cottage Cheese

Brownies, ice cream, even edible cookie dough — they’ve all got the same secret dairy ingredient.

Cottage cheese may not immediately come to mind as a dessert ingredient, but this dairy source may surprise you.

Its creamy, smooth texture blends seamlessly in brownies, cake, cookies, and homemade ice cream. Meanwhile, its mild, slightly tangy taste offers a neutral backdrop to various flavors and mix ins.

Using cottage cheese instead of cream cheese or heavy cream in desserts can also make your favorite treats more nutritious. For example, 1 cup of heavy cream contains 823 calories, 4.9 grams (g) of protein, and 146 milligrams (mg) of calcium, plus 85.3 g of fat (49 g from saturated) and 7 g of sugar.

On the other hand, a cup of low-fat cottage cheese provides just 163 calories, 2.3 g of fat, and 6 g of sugar but packs 28 g of protein and 138 mg of bone-building calcium.

That protein boost may help you feel more satisfied. Research suggests that protein promotes the release of gut hormones that regulate appetite and satiety.

This can be a plus for weight management (as you may feel more satisfied with less of that sweet treat).

Here are seven ways to incorporate cottage cheese into dessert.

All Everyday Health recipes meet expert-developed nutrient goals, considering several dietary guidelines. Learn more about the methodology behind why the recipes on this list are healthy.

These delicious cottage cheese brownies are moist and delicious, and the 5 g of protein per brownie ensure they’re more satisfying, too.

Blueberry Cottage Cheese Cheesecake

A slice of strawberry cheesecake from a restaurant like the Cheesecake Factory will set you back a cool 1,000 calories (yes, you read that right) or about half of your daily calories and 43 g of saturated fat (about 3½ times the recommended limit) in a single dessert! Instead of this calorie- and fat-rich traditional version, opt for a cottage cheese cheesecake for all the flavor and just over 200 calories and 1.5 g of saturated fat per slice.

1 5.3-oz container whole-milk Greek yogurt
3 large eggs

Healthier Carrot Cake

Healthier Carrot Cake

Although a vegetable stars in its title, carrot cake is traditionally not a healthy choice. That’s thanks to the saturated fat and high calorie count that comes from both the cake itself and that fluffy cream cheese frosting. Yet with a few small ingredient swaps, this dessert’s nutritional profile looks much more promising! For example, using cottage cheese and applesauce in place of butter adds calcium, protein, and fiber where there would otherwise be loads of saturated fat, per the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Greek yogurt also takes the place of cream cheese in the frosting for a much lower caloric treat without sacrificing on flavor!

TOTAL TIME

1 hr 15 min

Ingredients

1 cup 2 percent fat cottage cheese
⅓ cup unsweetened applesauce
⅔ cup maple syrup
3 large eggs
½ cup lowfat (1 percent) milk or milk of your choice
1 tbsp pure vanilla extract, divided
1 cup whole-wheat flour
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
½ tsp kosher salt
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
2 cups finely grated carrots
1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut, divided
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup lowfat Greek yogurt
½ cup powdered sugar

Directions

1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line the bottom of a round cake pan with parchment paper and set aside.

2

In a blender, place cottage cheese and blend until smooth, about 30 seconds. Pour cottage cheese into a mixing bowl and add applesauce, maple syrup, eggs, milk, and 2 tsp vanilla.

3

In a large mixing bowl, place both types of flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Whisk together until evenly combined.
