“As a registered dietitian, I always like to encourage getting in a variety of proteins, colorful veggies, and different carbohydrate options to ensure nutritional balance and keep the taste buds happy. When you plan for a week at a time, you can build in that diversity easily,” says Rosales.

I’m a registered dietitian with lots of experience in meal planning. I also spoke with several dietitians about choosing a meal planner that works for you and how to plan effectively.

If you choose to customize it in multiple ways, this planner can rapidly become more expensive than most other meal planner notebooks on the market. As a spiral-bound option, it’s also bulkier than other slim planners that may be easier to tuck into a purse or bag.

This planner is a tear-away pad that can be hung on a wall. Each spread features ample room for a week of breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Each weekly page also comes with a tear-away grocery list to take shopping with you.

However, because this is a tearaway pad, it’s not made for planning very far in advance. It also may not be a good option if you’re looking to store recipes or lists of your family’s favorite meals.

Before I got my Skylight Calendar, this is how I preferred to meal plan. I bought printables to do my weekly meal plan, create a pantry stock list, and record all of my family's favorite meals and snacks. I kept them all in the meal-plan tab in my home binder, which also included categories for bills, home maintenance, and gardening.

Although this printable set offers hundreds of meal ideas, it doesn't include any recipes for the listed meals.

I have and use a Skylight Calendar in my home. It’s on display at our breakfast bar, right where anyone in the family can use it to check the meal plan, search the calendar, and mark off their chores or tasks for the day. I find that the subscription is worth paying for, but more-affordable alternatives are definitely available. A smart-home hub, like the Amazon Echo Show, can offer many of the same features, along with additional smart-home features.

Paprika also has a full suite of tools that are helpful for cooking. For instance, it lets you cross off ingredients as you add them or set timers based on the times in the cooking instructions.

Paprika allows you to sync across multiple devices. But to store more than 50 recipes, you need to purchase the app. In addition, to use it on a desktop, you need to buy the paid Windows program. However, these prices are very affordable for a lifetime license.

Paprika has a bit of a learning curve and may be difficult for new users to use intuitively right away. Also, it has a basic, no-frills look that some people may dislike compared with sleeker-looking apps.

My family has used eMeals in the past during busy seasons. I appreciated that I could choose as many meals as I wanted per week from a large assortment of recipes. I also liked that I could automatically import my grocery list directly to the Walmart app. An annual subscription is affordable too, at roughly $5 per month. Plus, eMeals allows you to add personal recipes and import recipes from the web.

However, the app provides limited customization options for the meals it offers, unless you’re already a proficient cook and you know how to make substitutions yourself. Also, it may be difficult to cancel the service if you choose to do so.

AnyList Complete is a paid version that provides access to a suite of meal-planning tools. It also allows access to the AnyList web app for PC.

Editor Katie Tuttle and her household depend on this app to keep a running grocery list that she and her partner can view. “We use this app several times a week,” Tuttle says. “It’s a real lifesaver when my husband is at the store, and I suddenly remember I left an ingredient off the list. I also like that you can create categories (so, for example, we have a ‘Pets’ category for dog food and such).”

To choose the best weekly meal planners, we considered several factors. First, we spoke with a handful of registered dietitians about meal-planning strategies and how they prefer to plan meals. Here are the experts we spoke with:

What to Look for When Buying a Weekly Meal Planner

When buying a weekly meal planner, you'll want to consider things like:

  • Price This is especially important if you’re planning to use a smart calendar or a smartphone app. Most of them require some kind of fee in order to use them. Some recipe-management programs require just a one-time fee for lifetime access, and others charge for monthly or annual memberships. Be sure to consider these ongoing fees when setting your budget.
  • Ease of Use The best meal planner is the one you’ll actually use. If you prefer to keep it simple, Rosales recommends just using the Notes app on your phone or a blank calendar. When narrowing down apps, choose one with features that seem most useful and practical for your household.

What Are the Benefits of Meal Planning?

Meal planning can benefit your household in several ways. “Weekly meal planning is a lifesaver for busy families, budgeting, or just trying to ensure good nutritional balance of meals,” says Rosales.

According to Samantha DeVito, RD, who is based in New Jersey, it can “remove some of the daily decision-making around food.” It also can help reduce food waste, because you’re shopping with a plan, and each ingredient you purchase has already been accounted for, she says.

Gabrielle Kishner, RD, owner of Nutrition by Gabrielle in New York City, says that meal planning also can help your household rely less on last-minute takeout. And that's a benefit from both a budgeting perspective and a health perspective.

“Planning ahead also allows you to analyze the schedule for the week. Do you have any late workdays?” says Rosales. “Plan for a crock pot meal that night. Kiddos have sports? Stick to easy-to-prepare dinners on those nights.”

Although there isn’t a great deal of research on the benefits of meal planning, existing research shows that regular meal planning is linked to improved weight loss in people who are trying to lose weight.

 Meal planning also may lead to better diet quality and make it easier to eat a larger variety of foods.

Meal Planning Tips From Registered Dietitians

I’m a registered dietitian, and I also spoke to several fellow dietitians while preparing this article. Here are some of our best meal-planning tips to help you make the most of your meal plan, no matter what type of planner you choose:

  • Start simple. “You don’t need to meal-plan for every meal, every day,” says Kishner. “Even planning two or three dinners can make a difference.”
  • Keep track of household favorites. When our family tries a new meal we really enjoy, I write it down on my running list of our favorite meals. When I’m not sure what to meal-plan, I refer to my list of mainstays that I know the whole family will enjoy. “Rank them from easiest to most time-consuming so you have a go-to list when planning meals,” says Kishner.
  • Shop your pantry. Start every meal-planning session with what you already have on hand. Anything nearing an expiration date? Plan to use it up first. “Every Sunday we 'shop the pantry' to see what we already have, map out our meals for the week, and make a quick list for anything we need to buy,” says Chamberlain.
  • Cook extra portions. “Intentionally cook extra for leftovers,” says DeVito. Doing so “takes some pressure off having every meal planned out.” I like to cook extra portions of meat to save time on future meal prep. If I’m making taco meat, meatballs, or shredded chicken, I’ll double the recipe and put half straight in the freezer.
  • Make it a routine. “Pick a day of the week to plan and grocery shop,” says Rosales. “Developing a routine and being consistent is key.”
  • Keep it interesting. Rosales also recommends adding a new meal to try once a month or so. That could keep your household from getting bored with the meal rotation. She also suggests letting your kids help choose meals or new vegetables to try.
