We used to accept that aging meant our bodies would slowly, and then very quickly, fall apart, eventually succumbing to the diseases programmed in our genes. There was no fighting the inevitable. Longevity was just a matter of luck. But as science and technology have advanced, and we’ve seen more people live past 100, it’s looking like there may be ways to extend our healthy years. Research into how to live longer and better has led to the development of promising new supplements like fatty15.

I’m in my forties now, and I’m seeing some traditional hallmarks of aging in my body, like chronic inflammation, elevated cholesterol, and insomnia. Having watched my grandparents die of Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and lung cancer, I’m not interested in letting pure genetics dictate what happens next. That’s why, after reading the research on C15:0 — the one and only active ingredient in Fatty15 — and how it may help protect our long-term health, I decided to give it a try.

What Is Fatty15?

As noted above, fatty15 contains C15:0, also known as pentadecanoic acid. It’s essentially a type of saturated fat called an odd-chain fatty acid, and it’s primarily found in dairy products. But it’s also in some fish, plants, and bacteria.

 The version of C15:0 found in fatty15 capsules is completely vegan. It’s synthesized from plant-derived ingredients using “current Good Manufacturing Practices” (cGMP) in a facility registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. It’s also third-party tested, and deemed as “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS). (It’s also all patented, so we can’t provide you with many more details than that.)

Now, if the term “saturated fat” made you concerned, you’re not alone. For a long time, all saturated fats were incorrectly associated with increased LDL cholesterol, which in turn puts people at risk for cardiovascular disease. Over time, however, research has suggested that the link isn’t quite that black and white.

“We're learning that individual saturated fatty acids can behave differently in the body,” says Caitlin Beale, RDN, owner of Caitlin Beale Wellness in Sonoma County, California. Beale is not associated with fatty15. “The food the fat comes from, and even its chemical structure, may influence its effects on health.”

For example, some saturated fats are found in cow’s milk, including C15:0 and C17:0, and they may actually help prevent cardiovascular disease.

 Unfortunately, dairy also contains other proinflammatory saturated fatty acids, like palmitic acid and stearic acid, that are linked to higher cardiovascular disease risk.

 That means we can’t just go out and eat more cheese to protect our health. Palmitic acid is also the primary fat in red meat and processed meat, which is why those are still potentially risky foods.

Where Can You Get Fatty15?

You can buy fatty15 in capsule or gummy form directly from the supplement maker’s site. There, you have the option of purchasing a one-time 90-day starter kit, a one-time 12-month kit, or a 90-day starter kit with a subscription that will send you supplements every three months.

Fatty15 is also available in 90-day and 180-day amounts on Amazon.

What Can Fatty15 Help With?

Fatty15’s ingredient, C15:0, has been shown to act at the cellular level to prevent and protect against some of the conditions associated with aging. While scientists haven’t been studying this fatty acid for very long, there’s a lot of exciting evidence about what it can do. Fatty15 cofounder Stephanie Venn-Watson, DVM, MPH, and others have published 150+peer-reviewed studies suggesting it targets receptors in cells, including those that inhibit inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and repair mitochondrial function (which helps your body’s cells produce energy).

 Here’s how that might help us live longer, healthier lives.
Balanced Immune Response: In much the same way that omega-3 fatty acids do, C15:0 molecules bind with receptors called PPARs, which slow inflammation responses and improve the cells’ ability to produce energy.

Both of those processes naturally break down with age.

In studies of animals and in vitro cells, C15:0 has had a positive role in reducing the inflammation linked to heart disease, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline, and cancer.

It’s not a stretch to say that preventing inflammation can prevent disease, according to Jay Luthar, MD, the founder and medical director at Lutanen Health, a longevity-focused concierge practice in Boston. Dr. Luthar is not associated with or endorsing fatty15. “If you look at the disease states like heart disease, where plaques form in the blood vessels, it's not just because there's a lot of cholesterol; it's excess of blood sugar, and blood pressure that's in excess, and inflammatory signaling that's creating the conditions where the cholesterol and the plaques can all be deposited in the blood vessel walls.”

Metabolic Health: Researchers have found that, based on in-vitro studies, C15:0 interacts with how the body regulates glucose (blood sugar).

 That’s another way it may help prevent issues like liver disease, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

My Experience Taking Fatty15

When my fatty15 order arrived, it made an immediate impression. I received a small box that was neatly packed with an aesthetic, reusable glass bottle and three pouches, each of which contained a one-month supply of capsules. I was able to pour all three months’ worth of capsules into the bottle. I love that the bottle is reusable and that with a subscription, I’ll only receive the pouches moving forward, creating less waste.

The fatty15 capsules themselves are also noteworthy. They’re very small: about three-fourths of an inch (in) long and one-fourth of an inch wide. They have zero smell or taste, and they’re very easy to swallow. After all the giant, smelly pills and vitamins I’ve had to take over the years, this is a welcome change. I also appreciate that to get the recommended 100 milligram (mg)-dose of C15:0, I only have to take one capsule per day. Best of all, this supplement hasn’t upset my stomach once, even when I haven’t eaten anything before taking it.

If you can’t bear to swallow another pill (I get it), Fatty15 also comes in a gummy form. You do need to take two gummies as opposed to the single pill, though. That being said, they’re sugar-free and have a delicious apple-mint flavor that makes me wish I could take more than two a day.

According to the brand’s customer survey, within four months, 70 percent of people taking fatty15 notice side benefits like better sleep, energy, and mood. I’m not quite at the four-month mark, so I’m still looking forward to finding out if I’ll get those benefits, too.

As with most supplements, it’s hard to tell if one thing you’re taking has prevented you from developing a disease or condition. It’s kind of a no-news-is-good-news situation. But given how easy it is to take fatty15, and how promising the science is, I’m going to keep it in my vitamin rotation.

What happens to our cells when we age?
Among the many ways aging affects our bodies, cells are just not as good at doing their jobs as they get older. Cell chromosomes wear out the more they divide to make new cells, which means they’re more likely to make errors when replicating DNA. They’re also more prone to oxidative stress. This can lead to things like inflammation and metabolic disorder.

“[In] the process of living, the process of anything in existence, there's entropy,” Luthar says. “The more an activity, say, genetic replication, is being done, the more chance there is for a random error to occur. And that random error in genetic replication can lead to further errors.”

“There's always opportunities to improve health; the body is malleable and plastic,” Luthar says. “It's never too late to really start thinking about all the different aspects that can help a person live better.”

A few ways to stay healthy as we age are:

  • Make New Friends: A long-running study on longevity at Harvard University found that over multiple generations, the No. 1 factor that helped people live longer and have a better quality of life was their social connections.

  • Exercise: It doesn’t just improve our muscles, bones, and heart in the ways we commonly think of. “It's going to, at the cellular level, improve the health of the mitochondria,” Luthar says. “And exercise then induces these antioxidant capacities of our body to buffer against stress, and it helps our nervous system become more resilient, which then all have anti-inflammatory downstream effects.”

  • Eat Whole Foods: “If someone is interested in supporting heart health, metabolic health, or healthy aging, I always focus on food first — and especially nutrients with a stronger evidence base,” Beale says. “Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fatty fish, and olive oil have all consistently been associated with better long-term health outcomes.”

  • Get Screened for Cancer Regularly: Get your pap smears, colonoscopies, mammograms, and anything else your doctor recommends. “Even with the best lifestyle and exercise, of course, there's randomness and chance and bad genetics,” Luthar says. So you’ll need regular doctor visits to catch things as early as possible.
