With summer approaching, the risk for tick bites is on the rise, including Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS), the “red meat allergy.” AGS is a serious allergy to Alpha-gal, a molecule found in many mammals’ sugar tissues and in some ticks’ saliva. When a tick bites, its saliva may infect the person’s blood with Alpha-gal, which could cause AGS. Symptoms include sensitivities to red meat, dairy, certain medications, and some non-food-related items. If you're one of the nearly 450,000 Americans affected and are experiencing food sensitivity issues, Thrive Market may be able to help.

If you’re not familiar with Thrive Market, allow me to introduce you to my go-to online marketplace that keeps my house “thriving” (quite literally). It’s a monthly subscription service featuring thousands of eco-friendly household cleaning and laundry supplies; personal, bath, and beauty products; pet snacks; pantry goods; frozen proteins and meals; and oh-so-many healthy snacks.

It’s easy to browse the “aisles” and filter by dietary preference and lifestyle, ingredients, and environmental and social concerns. Recently, Thrive Market launched a new “Alpha-Gal Free” grocery search filter, which includes over 3,000 items. While I’m nowhere near sampling all, here are a few of my favorites:

Brami protein pasta

Brami Italian Protein Pasta

Our whole family enjoys Brami Italian Protein Pasta on the regular. It’s made with Italian durum wheat semolina and lupini beans, for a whopping 21 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber per 3.5-ounce serving. It cooks like regular pasta, and we often serve it with olive oil, fresh garlic, and broccoli for a one-bowl meal or with pesto. It’s dairy-free, vegan, and made without any fillers or preservatives. I gleefully reach for Brami Pasta on weekdays and love knowing I can whip up a healthy, satisfying dinner in minutes.
Thrive Market coconut amino sauce

Thrive Market Organic Coconut Aminos

We always keep a bottle of Thrive Market Organic Coconut Aminos in the fridge. It’s a liquid seasoning made from organic coconut tree sap that reminds us of a sweet and umami soy sauce. We use it frequently for Asian cooking, such as stir-fries, marinades, dipping sauces, or doused on homemade stovetop popcorn. It’s naturally gluten-free, boasts a low glycemic index, and is lower in sodium than traditional soy sauce, making it an excellent alternative for salt-conscious folks.
Thrive Market movie popcorn

Thrive Market Movie Popcorn Kernels

Speaking of popcorn, we don’t need a movie night as an excuse for a batch of homemade stovetop popcorn, which is why we’re recommending Thrive Market Movie Popcorn Kernels. Homemade popcorn is hands down one of our favorite snacks, and when made with minimal oil and toppings, it can be quite nutrient-rich. The non-GMO kernels are sourced directly from U.S farms and boast 6 grams of fiber, making them a satiating snack for the entire family. The kernels pop evenly in the pot, creating the ultimate airy, light popcorn we can’t resist.

Thrive Market sweet potato chips

Thrive Market Sweet Potato Chips, Multipack

Sweet potato chips can be a healthy snack swap, especially for grease-laden potato chips. That’s why we love the Thrive Market Sweet Potato Chips. Kettle-cooked in coconut oil and sprinkled with sea salt, these crispy snacks are a delicious sweet and salty treat. They’re non-GMO and gluten-free, and tasty on their own or dipped in tzatziki–or my personal favorite–crumbled on a roasted vegetable sandwich. This six-pack is perfect for school lunches or on-the-go outings.

Crunchsters simply sea salt mung beans

Crunchsters Crunchy Mung Beans, Sea Salt

As a relative newcomer to mung beans, I can enthusiastically say that the Crunchsters Crunchy Mung Beans are my latest pantry addiction. It’s a crispy sprouted superfood that touts 6 grams of plant-based protein. We often sprinkle it on top of salads or in dips for an added crunchy texture or simply enjoy it by the handful. Crunchsters are available in other flavors with various ingredients, but the sea salt is the safest Alpha-Gal-free version and just happens to be our favorite.
